if i go to oath, and a blessing goes to the graveyard, can they sac the crypt in response so that my graveyard gets removed instead of going back to my library.

Yes.

Works like this:

1) Resolve Oath by revealing cards until you find a creature or empty your library; after you stop revealing, put all revealed cards into graveyard. You have finished resolving Oath.

2) Put any triggered effects on the stack. Assuming that Blessing is the only one, it goes on the stack.

3) Active player receives priority. Must either add instants/abilities to stack or pass priority.

4) eventually, inactive player gets priority. They must either add instants/abilities to the stack or pass priority. This would be the time to use the Tormod's Crypt.

5) Once both players have passed priority consecutively, resolve the first item on the stack. In this example, Tormod's Crypt resolves and graveyard disappears.

6) You can figure out what happens from here on out.

are u sure thats how it works, i thought that since it all happens simotaneously, that the crypt wouldn't happen until all the cards went back to the library, so nothing would get removed.

By pippen on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 10:31 pm:

you still get your blessing back

By Myles on Thursday, January 03, 2002 - 11:54 pm:

ok thats good, cuz i hate crypt and was gonna play a powder keg to screw with that

If your opponent plays properly, you do NOT get your blessing back.

The reason it that these things DON'T happen simultaneously. They happen one thing at a time.

First, you search until you're done.(Resolving Oath, part 1)
Then, you put all the extra cards into the graveyard.(resolving Oath, part 2)
Then, you place any triggered effects on the stack.
Then you pass priority around and add instants/abilities to the stack until everyone is done.
Then, you start resolving them, with pauses inbetween each resolution for passing around of priority.

What may be causing the confusion is the fact that the triggered effect of Gaea's Blessing is not dealt with immediately when it hits the graveyard. It triggers, then waits for Oath to finish resolving before it can be placed on the stack.

During the resolution of any spell or effect(in this case, Oath) you cannot add anything to the stack ot try to resolve anything on the stack. It all has to wait until the current effect has finished resolving.

That's why it goes:
Oath activated
Oath resolves, putting Blessing and all other cards in graveyard
Blessing trigger is put on stack
Opponent uses Crypt in response when they obtain priority
Crypt will now resolve before Blessing(last in, first out) and you will shuffle an empty graveyard into your library.

Look, you're just confused because in the old rules, you couldn't respond to triggered effects.

Now, you can.

By Doc on Monday, February 04, 2002 - 04:40 pm:

so pre-classic rules, ie 5th ed., the gaea's blessing automatically resolves before there is a chance to trigger any abilities (the tormod's crypt)?

By Chu Ozawa (Chu) on Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 05:48 am:

Yes, that was it, but now it is changed

By Sodent on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 12:48 pm:

Ok let me make sure im hearing this right... If my opponent oaths, in the process of oath hits a gaea's blessing, keeps oathing until he gets a creature. Then you can use tormod's crypt after he gets the creature to remove the graveyard from the game before gaea's triggered ability?

Sorry I just wanna make sure because there are oath decks in my metagame.

Not before.

IN RESPONSE TO the trigger, so that the Crypt stacks after and resolves before the Blessing trigger.

He reshuffles an empty graveyard back into lib.
