Ok, I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the trading mill but it's just fun to talk about. Mods feel free to ban the thread if it's too far off-topic.
What was your worst ever magic trade?
Mine was probably 7 dual lands for a Leviathan.
a buddy of mine remembers trading a beta Black Lotus and a Mox for a Shivan Dragon and a Craw Wurm. Granted, this was back when magic was new and moxes were junk rares.
What about your best trade? I think mine was recently (2 control magic) for (1 Spiritmonger). ;) heh heh heh
4 Beta Sinks for 4 Tundra, 4 plateau
4 Avatar of Will for 4 Superman
1 Mox Sapphire and LoA for a damn bloody shivan !! same as ur pal .. oh man ...
a hypnotic specter for a wall. Who cares which wall.
I once traded 4 birds of paradise (rv) for 4 llanowar elves (4th). I mean I played mono green, and a 1/1 was better than a 0/1 any day. A friend of mine traded 4 Mox Saphire (beta) for 4 Dark Ritual (Beta). He said back then eveyone had Moxen, and Dark Rituals gave you 3 balc for onyl one, come on, sengirs, and hyppies amock!
Two mountains for an Armageddon. I'M NOT KIDDING.
Right before they reprinted cards in Chronicles, I traded
1 Old Man of the Sea & 1 Serra Angel for 1 Arcades Sabboth (the legends version, buy who cares?)
I don't know about bad trades but I sold a foil Coalition Victory for $20 to someone. Lucky me I guess.
best trade i've ever made: foil yawgmoth's bargain for:
*four deranged hermit
*four thorn elemental
*four might of oaks
*four powder keg
in my defense, i was new to the game, and knew foils were worth a lot, and i had no idea that the cards i selected were WORTH THAT MUCH. (heh heh. since day one i've had a taste for the expensive cards.) the guy that traded me all my cards? must have been smoking crack. fortunately, i never met him again, and did not have to put up with his (i'm sure) wails of anger and despair when the card was banned/restricted.
worst trade i've ever made: beta bolt and lin sivvi for
*japanese deranged hermit. don't ask me WHAT i was thinking... but in my defence, i've gotten a lot of play out of, and had a LOT OF FUN SPOUTING RANDOM JAPANESE playing that hermit. ;) "skue no ue ni tate kudasai!" (translation - please stand on the table.
A FOIL absorb for a regular Absorb and a Teferies moat, I mean FOIL Rares are all worth about $20, right...right??
Best trade I did was FOIL lanlowar waste for
4x urzas rage
Terah, Pie God
My worst trade ever would be 2 white knights and a hymn to tourach for an armageddon and a wrath of god.
The best trade I ever saw was a foil alternate-art Ertai for 2 absorbs
When i was a newcommer to magic, i turned down a mox, which was offered to me for a buck
The worst sale I ever made was 2 mint revised Birds of Paridise, 2 mint chronicles cities of brass, 1 mint BB hammer of bogarden, and 2 mint BB balduvian hordes for $30. I hadn't played magic for about 8 months and not until did i learn that the value of BoPs had shot up from about $7 to $15-20.
Any one want to give me these cards for $30?
Didn't think so.
my worst trade was when tangle wire first came out. i thought it was a crap rare and no one was using yet. i gave it away as a throw in in a trade.
i once got a morphling for driving to a fast food place for a kid who wasn't old enough to drive. it was only a mile down the road. i did that a second time for a bb vamp tutor. it was the same kid that i gave the tangle wire to a few months earlier. i ended up getting him back.
I just recently made a bad trade. It was not my worst ever, but it was bad enough to be remembered. I was desperate to get Adarkar Wastes and Meddling Mages. I traded with the owner of a card store.
I gave: 3 Urza's Rage
I got: 4 Adarkar Wastes (White bordered) and a Meddling mage.
I don't know what other people think of the trade, but I think that it was a bad decision. But I did really need those cards.
dude my friend traded a black lotus for a..get ready......a grizzly bear......hahahahah
my worst trade was a ghitu for a slice of pizza.
Wasn't even a good pizza!
The worst trade I have every done was probably...
2 Demonic Tutor (from beta) for 4 Unstable Shapeshifter(from tempest)and 1 Crovax, the Cursed(froms stronghold).
The best trade I've done is...
2 Mox Saphires, 1 Unstable Shapeshifter,2 Demonic Attorney(from beta), and 2 Llanowar Elves(from beta) for 4 Bird of Paradise(beta), 1 Demonic Tutor, 2 Yawgmoth's Bargain, and 1 Black Lotus(beta). Fortunatly, I still have those cards!
Who the hell has 2 Sapphires?
Not him anymore. I had two Emeralds once though...
Yeah, but those are Emeralds. He had Saphires.
My worst trade(s):
- 1 black bordered toundra (3rd) for 1 craw wurm.
- 1 black bordered demonic tutor (3rd) for another craw wurm.
Then I lost a craw wurm cos I was playing for ante... so I exchanged it back against a weel of fortune (white bordered at least). I really loved craw wurms at that time...
Then some years later, I had my mean revenge obtaining from a newcomer a shivan (4th) and a millstone (4th) for a soul net and an air elemental...
worst trades I ever made.
I started around the release of stronghold. The first product I bought was tempest.
And I traded a Cursed Scroll for 3 hypnotic specters.
Other than that, most of my deals have usually been at least reasonable on the surface 9no more than a couple of bucks worth of swing)
My best deal that I can remember was a $5 cdn rare (may have even been paladin en-vec but I think was a bit better, maybe void) for a FOIL wasteland, which I sold a soon as I found out what they were going for.
This trade didn't actually happen to me, but a friend of mine was urgent for money to fix his car that day, so he sold his deck with 20 duel lands, 4 force of wills and some other cool stuff for $40!
My personal best trade was a unlimited vesuvan doppleganger for a foil promo serra angel.
My worst trade was, huh, well, i've never had a bad trade, oh well.
Traded a Meddling Mage for a CROMAT
Some of my best ones:
-I traded a Penumbra Wurm for a foil Call of the Herd.
-I traded a Dual Nature for a BB Vampiric Tutor.
-I traded two Hunted Wumpus for a Hammer of Bogardan (6th) and a City of Brass (6th).
some of my worst ones:
-I traded a foil Pyre Zombie for a foil prerelease Questing Pheldagriff and two Adarkar Wastes (6th).
-I bought 2 FoWs for $20 each.
-I traded a foil Wash Out, a foil Undermine and a foil Jade Leech for a Misdirection, a foil Swamp, a Tropical Island and a Vyne Dryad.
My worst trade was a treachery for a capsize.
iuhm, i once gave away a living death to a newbie cuz i thought it was shit, i also traded away a serra avatar for an exploration....,
since that rtime i never ever made bad trades again....
Try this bad trades.
Serra Angel (Beta) for a Crash of Rhinos!!!
Morphling for a Questing Pheldagrif
3 Powder Kegs for a Meddling Mage
Some of the best...
$2 for a beta Serra Angel
2 Undermine for a Suffocating Blast, Prophetic Bolt, and 2 (UGB 6/4 creature from Apoc)
3 Undermines for 3 Rages
1 Rage for an Undermine
I hope you got the two undermines in that trade...
"Serra Angel (Beta) for a Crash of Rhinos!!! .... $2 for a beta Serra Angel"
Yeah, but that still means you paid $2 for a crash of Rhinos. I think you're still short on Karma there
Ah, back in the day when we had no idea what rarity meant... I traded 1 Time Vault and 2 Sinkholes for 1 Craw Wurm and 1 Drain Power... Several years later, I traded 1 Angry Mob, 1 Kird Ape (arabian) and 2 Chain Lightings for a Control Magic! I was in a hurry, and the bastard took every advantage of it... but then I also remember trading 1 Veteran bodyguard, 1 Serra Angel, 1 Howling Mine, 2 White Knights and 2 Crusades for 4 Tropical Islands and 4 Tundras, just the day before 4th ed. came out
Yes, I did get the Undermines in that trade. I traded loads of crap for 2 great cards. Then, I used those later to get rages when rages were more popular, and then when Undermine was more popular I traded my fifth Rage for an Undermine.
I routinely trade in peoples favor.
I traded away a mint candleabra of tawnos for 20 dolllars (when it was worth a lot more...), then turned and spent the 20 spot on fallen empires-ick-yech yech!
My best deals:
#1 Foil Rishiadon port, for 5 duals and a Foil Shivan Phoenix (wich gets traded in next trade)
#2 Foil Shivan Phoenix, Foil Thorn Elemental plus 12 misc rares, for a Library Alexandria!
#3 300 dollars worth of medium rares for aprox 20-25 dual lands.
#4 Foil alt art weatherlight for Foil undermine, absorb, misc rares.
Funny how my best deals revolve mostly around silly foils...
I once traded a kid an Ashen Powder(6th) for a Lightning Angel and Meddling Mage. He didnt play more than one color in a deck so he wanted to get rid of them. Unfortunately, the store owner say the deal go down and warned me that if I ripped little kids off again, I wouldnt be allowed to come back in the store. The kid got pissed, cause he liked me for some reason, and told the store owner that he wanted to do the trade, and didn't care that I got a better deal. After the kid left, the store owner gave me the same warning, and I told him to stick it, and have never been back to that store. I hear its going out of business now......
I just traded an Armageddon for a Devoted Caretaker. A bad, bad trade to begin with. Then I put the card in my pocket for safekeeping. Later that day, I put a hard cover book into my pocket. When I took the card and book out of my pocket, the Devoted Caretaker was creased through the center. So if you figure it all out, I traded:
Armageddon FOR A creased Devoted Caretaker
i just gave a foil bamboozle for a simple "thank you" - enjoyed it , though.
4 undermines for 4 armageddons and 2 prophetic bolts
My worst trade was Absorb for a Whirlwind
My best trade was a foil battlefield forge for:
1xNemata, Grove Guardian
1x Something Else
my best trade was a balance (4th) for 36 rares rishidan port, ball lightning, multani, mox diamond, 4 pipers, 4 defense of the heart, serra avatar, nether spirit & squee among others that i cant remember
I one time traded a row of brownies for a Legends rare card, though I can't remember which one.
When I first started playing, I traded a Mox Sapphire (alpha or beta, dunno which) for 2 serra angels (1 beta and 1 unlimited) and an Invisibility.
I once traded a desperate friend my last cigarette
and a Distorting Wake in return for 2xAbsorbs and
*realized he couldn't make bad trades when he recognized he cared nothing more about the worth of the cards and started giving them away left and right*
Not too long ago, in a land far, far away, I did this "thing"
1 Urza's Rage
1 Revised Wrath of God
1 Exodus Coat of Arms
1 Devoted Caretaker
1 Shadowmage Infiltrator.
Ahh, it was my fourth. Guess I'm just one of the fools driving up the price of "the big bullseye"
A Aegis of Honor, Ground Seal and Catalyst Stone for Darigaaz.
A Deadapult for Aegis of Honor.
An Atogatog for Aegis of Honor(all to the samr person.)
A Spiritmonger and Child of Gaea for assorted medium rares.
A Lightning Angel plus Spectral Lynx for $8 Cdn.
A Mindslicer for $5 Cdn.
And, best of all, a Delraich, Devouring Strossous
and 2 other cards I forget for Death Grasp, Ghitu Fire, Equilibrium and Mystic Snake. I still feel bad about it.
A FOIL Masticore(really) for Morphling, Tangle Wire and other medium rares. In play value a good trade but geez...
Sold two Mystic Snakes for... $6 Cdn.
A Meddling Mage for $5 Cdn.
An Ice Age Llhurgoyf for a common.(I don't know which one.)
3 Morphlings for 4 Keldon Firebombers, back when Urza's rotated out and I thought KFBs were gonna be Geddon-with-a-beatstick. It physically HURT letting those Morphs go. I'd played my first tournies with them. But then of course, KfBs turned out to be SOOOOO good.
And now last week, I let a foil Crosis go for a single Pernicious Deed.
It must be a fragile chromosome thing.
A foil land for a Black Vise( and I got the Black Vise)
I let go of my Morphling for a buck!
best trade i've ever made: foil yawgmoth's bargain for:
*four deranged hermit
*four thorn elemental
*four might of oaks
*four powder keg
I heard about a trade similar to this at Chicago Regionals in 1999. Someone traded a foil Replenish for 4 Morphling, 4 nonfoil Replenish, 4 Parallax Wave, 4 Parallax Tide, and 3 Attunement (I think.)
my best trdae most be
my BETA Mox Emerald
and Alpha Jayemdae TOme (SIGNED)
for 1 UNL Signed Mox Emerald
and 1 Juzam Djinn
My best? 3 bucks for 4 Trechary.
I'm never even gonna use them, but dumb people deserve to get screwed.
1 visions vampiric tutor for 1 invasion reya, dawnbringer
I traded an unlimited Mox Sapphire for two Underground Seas and $10. The thing is, I made a profit on it... later that week, the new Scrye came out, listing Moxen at $100 and climbing steadily...
I've also traded an unlimited Beserk and a revised Fork for a Pyramids. I knew it was a bad deal monetarily, but I at least got to ruin the guy's day by immediately asking him quite pointedly how much he took me for. He was quite crestfallen. The sad thing is, I threw this card (and about 6 other decks worth) out when overzealously cleaning my car...
Such is life...
Oh my, where to begin . . .
My worst trade was definitely when I gave a friend of mine about $1000 (in 1996 value) worth of cards, including a lotus, two moxes, a ton of duals, and a bunch of other good old cards, and he never payed me. Jerked me around for about a year and a half, then changed his address. If he hadn't been in Texas, and I in PA, then something bad would've happened. Strangest thing about it though was that he'd bought almost $2000 worth of cards from me about a month before that, so why wouldn't I trust him? That turned out bad in hindsight too, since I sold him at least 20 beta duals for like $20 each, 4 Juzams for $75, Power9 cards for about half what they go for now, etc, etc. (Trying to suppress lingering sadness) If I had all that stuff today, it would be worth at least $5000, you name it I had it. But, oh well.
Best trade I ever had was a beta Mox Jet, a whole necro deck (when it was a big deal), and several sinkholes, all for one unlimited Timetwister. The mox what a bit more played that the Twister, but when I asked the guy what he wanted me to throw in, all he took was an armageddon and a Balduvian Trading Post (red alliance sac land). I was too shocked to stop the deal, and the dude was never bitter, he just didn't care. Ahh, to reminisce . . . at least I can say I still made way more at magic than I ever spent. Then there's the story of how I got ripped off for my Beta Lotus, but in the end came out 4 Moxes ahead on the deal [Kind of a best/worst trade all wrapped together, I really loved that Lotus] I could go all night with this stuff, so I'll stop now.
HengeWolf, former Planeswalker and Beta master.
my worst trade was 6 duals for a shivan...
just because we thought duals "sucked" #-(
The first day or two that I got into the game, I traded a bayou for a Cockatrice, and a Taiga for a Hive! Dual lands were 'just lands' and they seemed boring . . . Of course I didn't really know how to play at the time, and I remember asking someone if Thicket Basilisk was restricted (It can kill ANY creature, that's so good!). I quickly realized duals were good, however, and I collected them relentlessly. I sold so many alpha and beta duals for $20 a piece (sniff) . . .
1 mana drain for a couple
white flying creatures.....
*sniffle*. oh well.
I routinely take the worst side in trading, especially with litle kids, but I've never screwed myself too badly. I guess my worst trade would be my foil Lin Sivvi and a 4th ed. Wrath for 6 foil swamps, but that kid was in a wheelchair and only had one leg, so I didn't care.
My best trade was last week, when I got an Unlimited Black Lotus for: 2 Hanna Ship's Navigator, 2 Second Chance, 3 5th ed. City of Brass, 1 Holistic Wisdom, 1 Glorious Anthem (saga), 1 Armored Guardian, 1 Shivan Wurm, 1 Chronicles Ernham Djinn, 1 Mirari, 2 Mageta the Lion, 1 Tradewind Rider, 1 Crystal Quarry, 2 Null Brooch, and 1 Planar Portal. They book out at $136 high Scrye price, so I feel pretty good about it. The only card I hated losing was the Tradewind, but I'll live without it, I guess, lol..........
Good God, Gil, where the hell do you FIND these people???
At a store today I saw a chronicles Erhnam for $25. It was hard to tell if t was signed or not, that's the only explanation I can think of. Unless they cant tell the difference between white and black borders.
My worst trade ever was probably my two Beta Psionic Blasts (one signed) for a couple Bayous and other random stuff. A few months later I saw unlimited ones going for $25 Fortunately, I got the Psi Blasts for almost nothing, so I actually made a profit on the deal...
My best recent trade that I can remember was my Shadowmage Infiltrator, Gaea's Cradle, and 13 random bad Invasion rares for a NM English Abyss and Tropical Island. The dual was the 40th for my set :D
Best trade: 2 Vizzerdrix and a Trained Orgg for a Wrath of God, Ensnaring Bridge and a random Painland (it was a newbie)
i think one of my best trades was:
1 Soul Link
1 Hull Breach
1 Lord of the Undead
( my zombie deck is working nicely now ^_^ )
one of my worst:
1 mogg fanatic
Here's another bad trade I made, it was during a period when I'd 'quit' magic, so I almost forgot.
My friend Joe and I both bought a few decks of Urza's Saga, neither of us played much at the time and we were just out to reminisce and have some fun. We decided to trade each other cards in the colors we wanted to play, and I ended up trading him a Morphling for . . . a Whirlwind. Because he was focusing on blue, and I on green. The funniest part is that the morphling is still buried in his room somewhere in a Saga deckbox . . . as far as I know that was the last time he played magic.
Oh, what the hel. Here's what I gave up for a Beta Lotus back in '95, judge for yourself whether or not it was good.
1 Unl. Chaos Orb
1 All Hallows Eve
1 Unl. Berserk
4 Rev. Taiga
1 Unl. Word of Command
+ $30 cash.
= 1 Beta Black Lotus (white edges, otherwise nice, it had the appearance of old parchment)
I later lost my lotus in a giant messed up deal, I came out way ahead monetarily in the end, but still it was my first. I've owned at least 1 Lotus in every edition ever made, but I'd now pay a premium only for that one in particular. Last I heard it ended up in some guy's Christopher Rush collection, now it's probably in Singapore or something . . .
This is the worst trade i ever made, but I am impatient and would probibly do it again.
I traded a good condition Unlimited Mox Jet, and 4 mint cursed scroll + $40.00 store credit and $20.00 cash for a good condition unlimited mox emerald!
it was to a store with a reputation for shrewd trades, but it was the last of the power cards i needed so i just bent over and took it.
I gave away a Birds on two seprate occasions to the same person. Friendship is more important than Magic...sometimes
1 Kavu Lair
1 Foil AA Ertai The Corrupted that I later sold for $50.00 =)
My WORST would have to be...
1 UL NM Mox Sapphire
4 Orim's Chants
4 Birds of Paradise
3 IA Brushland
3 Destructive Flow
I prolly got a bit more, but still I traded down and I don't even use the cards anymore =\ Though, to be fair, it was my extra sapphire =)
My worst trade ever:
I once traded away a force of will for some crap uncommon, I don't even remember what i got for it!
In my defence, I had accidentaly placed it in my common box, never realized i owned it, and when my friend asked if i would trade it, i didn't even notice what it was he was holding. Damn it! And he calls himself my friend!
I'm really glad I never played back in beta ofI'd be kickin' myself. My trade is still pretty bad though: I traded an absorb for a molimo maro sorceror.
my best trade was: that giant mercanary and 3 foil islandsfor a foil FoF and something else
Here's a funny end to one of my "bad trades". When Saga came out, I traded a Morphling from my one starter deck for a Whirlwind from my friends deck. He wanted blue, I wanted green, neither of us cared too much. A rare for a rare. Of course, I later found out that Morphling is one of the most popular cards! And I traded it for a junk rare!
Well, 3 years later and I'm at his house, and what does he find under his bed? The deck with the morphling in it. He quit playing years ago, so of course he let me have the cards. Friendship, it's a wonderful thing . . .
-HengeWolf, Druid Anarchist
I am the King of Horrible Trades.
Maraxus of Keld for a Keldon Warlord
Denizen of the Deep for 7 Craw Wurms
My best trade....Aww hell, my greatest moment in all the time ive played magic was paying 25 cents for a Polar Kraken.
HEY HENGE WOLF
I live in texas, if he's anywhere close want me to pay him a visit *wink wink*
worst trade ever was recently, but i think's it's good because i don't value rages (odd huh) very high at all.
1x Urza's Rage
1x Mystic Enforcer
1x Mystic Crusader
2x Pianna Nomad Captain (my favorite creature, sadly it is!)
4x Tolarian Winds (bb)
This is what I traded away:
2 Thorn Elemental (Destiny)
4 Hypnotic Specters (ok condition, 4th edition)
a set of those Cameos from Invasion (uncommon artifacts)
This is what I got in return:
1 Llanowar Wastes
1 random foil common
1 random foil uncommon
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Coastal Tower
1 Urborg Volcano
1 Shivan Oasis
1 Coalition Victory
That was a sweet deal... I later traded the foil Monger away for:
2 Phyrexian Scuta
3 Skizzik (for some odd odd reason, i took 3 Skizziks when i only needed 2... i should have taken another Blazing Specter instead but oh well...)
2 Blazing Specter
1 Raging Kavu
1 Crypt Angel
So after you do all the math, I basically gave away 4 Hippies, 2 Thorns, 1 Verdeloth, 1 Molimo, and 5 junk uncommons for 1 Llanowar Wastes, 1 Coalition Victory, 1 Fact or Fiction, 1 Coastal Tower, 1 Urborg Volcano, 1 Shivan Oasis, 1 Spiritmonger, 2 Blazing Specter, 2 Phyrexian Scuta, 3 Skizzik, 1 Raging Kavu, 1 Crypt Angel, 1 random uncommon foil, and 1 random common foil.
Last week i traded a Cromat, Gerarrd and another crap rare for a Morphling. Man! I thought i would never get rid of those.
I traded 2 rages for 2 pardic miners, and 3 mine layers..... cause i was pressed for them day before a tourny.....
I think my worst was a badlands for a chains of mephistopheles. I had 8 badlands at the time, though.
The best was about 100 commons that I could replace for about $2 and a force of nature for 1 demonic horde, 1 serra angel, 2 sengir vampire, 4 hypnotic specters, 2 scrubland and 3 black knights
one of my first packs (tournament pack) after i got the rulz straight (the first idoit to teach me made the rules up himself) contained a Morphling and an Acadamy. I don't even remember what i got, but it was a horrible ripoff. I hated those cards at the time, but still...
i traded 2 shivan dragons, 1 avatar of fury, and 1 avatar of might, just for a stupid BoP.... but i needed the BOP more
When at first phyrexian negator came out, i traded 3 negators for a wildfire....i thought that negators sucked.....shoot me!
My best trade is:
2 Ogre Taskmasters
1 Dust Bowl
Worst is when i bought a Foil Death Pit Offerring for 10$
My worst trade was 80 basic lands and I lost a Cursed Scroll. I had to do it 'cuz nobody and I mean NOBODY would trade me lands for anything else.
Just tonight I lost a Deckmasters Necro, a Beatdown Ball Lightning, a Kamahl, an Avatar of Might, a Utopia Tree, a Vindicate, a Mossfire Valley, and two Foil basic lands for two Mystic Snakes because I REALLY need Mystic Snakes. jury's still out on whether I got screwed on that one or not. For the record, I had absolutely no use for anything I traded.
My best trade was 12 basic lands for an Avatar of Fury, me receiving the Avatar. I ususally don't cheat people, cause I'm honest, but that girl was a jerk.
Anybody got a Mystic Snake?
I once traded a good condition UL Time Walk for a good condition Beta Gauntlet of Might. I wasn't playing blue, and at the time I was obsessed with making a Gauntlet deck. The guy was a jerk and wouldn't take anything else for it. Around the same time I also traded an okay Ancestral for a p.o.s. condition Mox Pearl that I didn't really need, and I think I traded the Timetwister for a forcefield or something. Not at all related to the time when I got a god-deal for a different twister. Pathological hatred of blue can make a person do some strange things. Also, there was way more parity between the values of UL/Beta rares then than there is now. Ironically, although I'm still not crazy about blue, I'd definitely rather have those cards than any of the stuff I ended up with. Not that I'd still own any of it now regardless . . . that entire collection was the one that basically got flushed down a toilet somewhere in Texas.
Hmm, I guess in a way, I screwed over the guy who ripped me off. Nice.
But I was still ripped off . . .
Sadly, I guess I have to list my affair with the
Australian Chris Woolley (known here as Zanethian)
as my worst trade ever. He offered me some cards
if I bought him some posters of Finnish metal
bands (because they really aren't imported to
Australia that much).
So I bought two band flags, which are of better
quality than paper posters and endure shipping
better. I guess he didn't send the cards, after
all I never received them and he hasn't contancted
me since I asked him to look up the matter with
his post office (he claims they were sent registered).
The eventual scenario: I invested money in flags I
have no use for, and have nothing in return.
Great. (We agreed that he sends first because of
very few online trading references.) At least
most of you got some (albeit crappy) cards for
your trouble. I am quite sure I won't manage to
sell the flags for anywhere near the retail value
I paid for them.
When I first started playing and you could still buy Revised I got a dual land from my friend for almost nothing. At the time I didn't know what it's value was; I would trade for any nonbasic lands simply because I liked the way they looked. I later gave it back to him when I found out what it was worth. God that was a long time ago.
Matti Nuortio, what finnish bands??? Maybe I'm interested...
i traded a leviathan for:
2 goblin welders
also, i traded a morphling for:
1 AN city of brass
i also let him borrow another morphling.
Damn, I'd trade my Leviathan for anything... Is that guy lookin' for another one (from beatdown)
you guys are always talking about "bad trades". However, isnt the point that everyone gets what they want? If you rip yourself off monetarily to get the cards you need to finish a deck, then isnt the opportunity cost worth it? That is how the trading game works, folks...
Problem is, everyone seems to want money. I hate that. When I trade, it is always for cards I need or want. I am always fully aware of the "monetary" value of any cards involved in the trade, but only because it has some meaning to the person I'm trading with; not to me. I've been known to give away for FREE heavily popular or expensive cards that I have no use for to people that do need or want them. I'd like to expect the same of others, but I know I'm fairly singular in that ideal, and no one will return me the favor but very close friends. A card is worth only what I'm willing to give for it. If I'm desperate enough for something, I'll give much more than its worth. If it's something I'd like to have but don't need immediately, unless you part with it easily, I won't make a major effort to get it. Eh. The thought process of a jaded player, I guess.
traded a tourney ticket to the judge for a lin sivi foil...
... i want my ticket back
okay. i am known as the luckiest player ever both in good luck on getting stuff and on doing poorly at t2 games despite the fact that i copy the pros decks. Anyhow, I have rarely been burned in a trade, but these are my best and worst trades:
My things that I got are mentioned first.
1 Thallid 60 cents
1 badly beaten up Johann from Chronicles $2.00
1 Urzas Rage for 1 Divert
1 French Revised Wrath of god, 4 other medium rares- 1 Near mint 6th edition English wrath of God, 1 pernicious deed
3 Rathi Dragons, 2 Price of Progress, 1 River boa for 3 Ball Lightnings
1 Fact or Fiction, 1 Thwart for 1 Thorn Elemental (At least it was a starter Thorn Elemental)
2 Pages front and back of bad rares (all but 4 troublesome spirits when masques was still t2) $25.00
An entire book of bad cards for all but a shivan dragon and 2 millstones
Okay, now you may just call me the luckiest man in the world:
4 Demonic Hordes (Revised), 3 Mishra's Factory, 3 Phyrexian Furnace, 4 Hypnotic Specters, 4 Time Elemental (4th edition), 2 Howling Mines from Revised, 3 Ice ages Adarkar Wastes, 2 Serra Angels (Revised), 1 Kird Ape (Revised) for $10.60 at this store where the idiot owner chose not to label the prices on his magic singles and the clerk that sold them to me thought that they were all uncommons which are cold for 50 cents, but thought that the Kird Ape was common
At another store where they guesstimate the prices, with great deals on rares, but crap for commons and uncommons:
2 Spiritmonger, 2 Pernicious Deed, 2 Llanowar Wastes, 2 Desolation Angel, 3 Birds of Paradise (7th edition), 2 Shivan Wurm for $63 (bought in separate trips, but total, they cost me.....)
What I bought from this guy that was quitting magic for Legend of the 5 Rings;
4 Taiga (Revised), 2 Swords to Plowshares (Unlimited), 2 Serra Angel (Unlimited and Revised), 1 Wheel of Fortune, 2 Royal Assassin, 3 Mana Leak, 2 Gaea's Blessing, 3 Treetop Village for $40
Another little kid that wanted to trade with me:
1 Wrath of God (5th Edition) for my Millstone (Revised)
Same kid: Foil Magetta the Lion for 2 Desolation Angels (This could be either way.)
A guy in college when I was first starting:
Adarkar Wastes from Ice Ages 10 cents
This guy that I think works at a burger king in my town:
Summer Mishra's Factory mint condition (Antiquities) and 1 Ivory Tower (Antiquities) in mint condition $2.50
My best friend (I AM SUCH A BASTARD [even though this price turned out to be for the beta card before I looked at Ebay for prices]!!!!!!!!)
1 Craw Wurm from 5th edition in played condition $2.00
3 Wrath of God (1 French Revised, 2 5th edition) near mint for $9.00
These are just a few of my outstanding deals
Also, write me at AIM at misterhankey1234 for games on apprentice
oops. almost forgot to post this one:
From this dude that was a total dick to trade with:
3 Badlands (Revised) $20 Yeah, serves you right, asshole.

Worst trade (my first)- two beta badlands and mox jet for four beta plains and a serra argh
My best, 4 roc of ker ridges beta, 1 beta doppleganger for 4 (yes 4) library of alexandria
To quote the guy, "I don't know how anyone ever has 7 cards in hand. This thing is so unusable."
2nd best 4 jesters mask for 4 necro potence and 4 demonic consoltation and 1 jester's cap
my worst trade was when i first started magic and bought a lot of nemesis packs, i pulled a tangle wire and i trade it for viserex, man that was realy stupid, i thought the viserdrex was better because it dealt 6 damage and i was stunned by that.
my best trade(deal) was getting 2 birds and a rage for a total of 20$
My: Irridescent Angel + Foil Diabolic Tutor
His: 4x Overrun + Nankunto Mentor
this was at the prerelease so i didn't think Irridescent was going to become so valuable
Pre-releace fungal shambler=call of the herd.
These were when Legends was the new set:
Gave: Ali from Cairo, Got: Dakkon Blackblade
Gave: 2 Mana Drain, Got: Don't even remember! probably 2 other Legends uncommons
The value on this trade has varied over the years:
Gave: Beta Serra, Beta Ice Storm, Beta Icy Manipulator (all NM) Got: 3 Rare Legends + Nether Void
Hindsight is always 20/20:
Me: I'll give you $20 for that NM Mox Jet
Him: It's $25
Me: $25 is too much
here is my bad trades. most of them are from when i first started which was right before last summer.
i sold a mutilate for 3$
i gave 3 wrath of god, 2 sixth, 1 fourth, for a mirsha's helix
i paid 7$ for a seventh edition elvish champion
i gave a visions vampiric tutor for some commons for my mercenery deck when i started
i gave a foil shivan reef for 2 wrath of god and a phyrexian arena
i paid 60$ for 4 vindicate
i paid 15$ for 3 necravolver
i paid 10$ for a desolation angel
i paid 35 bucks for 2 phyrexian scutta and 1 doomsday specter
i was hungry so i sold a skizzik for a bag of funions
i gave a vindicate right out of a pack for a scutta not even in mint condition
these came to mind also after i posted this
i sold a foil baskin rootwalla for one dollar and i sold a teferie's moat for two dollars.
I traded some power with sh0e. WORST TRADE EVER
OK.....Back in January 1997 I sold my deck w/22 duals, 5 moxes, a lotus, a juzam, and too many other medium priced rares to a store for $450.00 total. Why? I was discouraged at the direction WoTC was taking MTG and wanted to get out. This was also at a time that I wanted to show my wife how much I loved her, so I took the money and bought a violin she had been wanting as a surprise (I gave up MTG for her... ). She played the violin ONCE over the next 4 years!!!!!!
We later sold the violin for $100.00 at a music store.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, be as STUPID as I was!!!! If you get your hands on great OOP cards, never, let them go....YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!
About 4 or 5 months ago I got back into MTG and am steadilly rebuilding my collection. Thank God for the essentialmagic.com proxies....
I guess I'm fortunate to still be married....maybe.
Andy T.--reprint duals--
Was your wife requiring that you give up magic "or else?"
I hope not, but I have done crazy stuff for love as well.
Congrats on getting back into magic, the game needs as many players as possible, esp. type 1 players.
If you ever want to play on MTG play or Magic the Encyclopedia, email me
No, it wasn't an ultimatum (I faled spelin al truw skule) or any such thing, I just wanted to do something nice (yuk!) for her since, at the time, things weren't going so good. Oh, well, next time I'll take her out to eat, buy an outfit, see a movie, give her a diamond ring and a dozen rozes; it'll be cheaper...
Andy T.--reprint duals--
K, when I started Playing MTG, (when Destiny came out) I traded away a Masticore for a ten of each basic land(all WB)
Damn me i traded 4 masticore and 4 treachery for 1 stroke! was when destiny jus came out and junk diver was even better then masticore, and stroke was THE card to have...
Best trade: My 2x Lord of Atlantis(wb) a for his McChicken meal at McDonalds. I hadn't eaten a bite the whole day, and was getting hungry after 7 rounds of swiss and the Top 8 still to come, the time being 8PM or something like that.
Worst trade: My Morphling for his 10USD. Never should have sold it.
I couldn't tell you what my worst trade ever was, i'd have to give it a little more thought, but when tangle wire was thought to be the best card in the game i traded 2 foil tangle wire for
4 Phyrexian Negator
4 Lurking Evil
4 Foil Gush
4 Foil Troublesome Spirit
4 Rapid Decay
4 Tectonic Break
2 Lightning Dragon
3 Foil Foil
4 Temporal Adept
and some other foil commons (4 of each) for my blue skies and suicide black decks, respectively
the dude said he had tons of copies of all the cards, and he couldn't find foil wired anywhere at the time, he practically threw his binder at me
Damn... not a bad effort.
Excuse the understatement, I'm (almost) English .
My best trade in recent weeks was a legacy weapon and $20Aus for a foil Call of the Herd. Non foil ones sell for more than that!
ANYONE's worst trade will be spending any real money on buying this website.
