You're missing Sengir Vampire.

By Puschkin, Defiant Vanguard Against The Phyrexian Invasion (Puschkin) on Saturday, January 19, 2002 - 08:10 pm:

Confirmed? I mean, is this official?

By dbuel on Saturday, January 19, 2002 - 08:31 pm:

Hell-Bent Raider
R, Creature - Barbarian, 1RR, 2/2
First strike, haste
Discard a card at random from your hand: Hell-Bent
Raider gains protection from white until end of turn.

WOW. R&D has not only decided that it's OK for black to get a 2/1 shade for 2, but also that it's OK for red to get a 2/2 hasted first striker for 3. Amazing!
I mean, the expensive wacky cards are interesting and all, but it's really cool to see fundamental changes in thinking in terms of what each color gets for 2 or 3 mana.

By Rakso, Patriarch & Rules Ayatollah (Rakso) on Saturday, January 19, 2002 - 09:58 pm:

Actually, this is a variant of Suq'Ata Lancer, an old mainstay.

The name is gay though...

By Puschkin, Defiant Vanguard Against The Phyrexian Invasion (Puschkin) on Saturday, January 19, 2002 - 10:02 pm:

Looks more like Lava Runner to me.

By Paranoid Android on Sunday, January 20, 2002 - 12:20 am:

Sonic Seizure, oh my lord, it's the end of the world!

By Henge Wolf (Wolf) on Sunday, January 20, 2002 - 03:57 am:

Skullscorch anyone? Hmm, for RR I either Hymn you or nail you for 4! I find it almost . . . hard to believe.

-HengeWolf

By Arkadi Svidrigailov (Arkadi) on Sunday, January 20, 2002 - 07:58 am:

Yeah, skullscorch definitely rocks. Sonic seizure might seem great, but hardly anybocy played sonic burst either. Red sure got the best deal after black, though. I like the Hell-Bent(I really don't want to know what that means) raider a lot, as well as the grim lavamancer.
It's a pity magic seems to run out of names to give to the cards... I mean: 'dwell on the past', 'Pay no heed'? That sucks.
Casual cards like radiate rock!
I think madness could be very strong in the right decks.
Oh yeah, and it sucks that the possessed cards, the shade, the dreams, sckullscorch and even insist are rare!

By Paranoid Android on Sunday, January 20, 2002 - 08:24 am:

what i mean is that Sonic Seizure compared to the bolt....

By BWM, phyrexian infiltrator on Sunday, January 20, 2002 - 11:10 am:

Talking 'bout Radiate, what do you think are the perfect targets??? (I thought about Donate, but that doesn't work since Donate has 2 targest (a permanent and a player)

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 11:46 am:

For multi-player, I like the idea of casting Radiate on an Eradicate.

By BWM on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 12:23 pm:

I'd love to see it on a Illicit Auction... Things'll get pretty messy...

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 01:35 pm:

With the Radiate who chooses that order that effects go on the stack? Caster is my guess.

-Rico

By BWM, phyrexian infiltrator on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 03:47 pm:

just cool...

----

-Somebody interested in a Llanowar Elves???
-I give you 1 life for it...
-Going once, going twice, gone...

-Somebody interested in a Verdant Force???
-I give you 1 life for it...
-I give you 2...
---
-I give you 19...
-Going once, going twice, gone... You lost moron, you're at one life and I have a Mogg Fanatic

I would just looooove a game like those...

By Andrew, the Sphinx Slayer (Andrew) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 04:41 pm:

Rico: The caster of the radiate chooses the order the effects go on the stack.

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 04:47 pm:

Radiating an Illicit Auction would be truly amazing.

-Rico

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 04:49 pm:

I'm gonna make a deck out of that. I'm just trying to figure out if it would make more sense to auction the expensive creatures first or last. Hmmm. That should keep me pondering for a while.

-Rico

By Matt the Great (Matt) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 05:28 pm:

Now that's a good use for Congregate.

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 05:32 pm:

Radiate twice using Mirari (or Fork). Hehehe.

By BWM, phyrexian infiltrator on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 10:03 am:

what other targets to play Radiate on??? Rico Jones, you want two more Illicit Auctions??? (1 6th, 1 Mirage)

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 10:39 am:

The obvious are any direct damage or targeted creatur removal. Basically Radiate turns every Disenchant, Swords to Plowshares, etc. into mass removal. Pretty sweet I'd say. Especially if, say, you were playing with mostly untargetable creatures. That would be quite sick.

-Rico

P.S. I'll pass on those Illicit Auctions.

By BWM on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 03:33 pm:

That's pretty booring (and easy)... I want to know the COOL targets... Radiating a Radiate (with a giant stack) becomes a mess...

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 04:18 pm:

You can't Radiate a Radiate.

Radiate targets an Instant or Sorcery that targets a single player or permanent.

Thus, Radiate is not a valid target for another Radiate.

How about Radiating a Sever Soul? Mass creature removal AND life gain.

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 04:49 pm:

How about that black and blue card that Anthony Alongi uses. It's six mana, lets you take an opponents creature and sacrifice it for life. Spinal Embrace, there we go. Works even better than Sever Soul; it only kills opponents creatures and you get to throw the creatures at various opponents. Dang that would kick a**.

-Rico

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 05:54 pm:

For multi-player annoyance, Radiate a Denying Wind.

You would also target yourself, but Denying Wind says "remove up to seven cards" so you wouldn't have to remove any of your own cards if you didn't want to.

By Henge Wolf (Wolf) on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 10:49 pm:

Radiate might be one of the coolest cards they've made in a while, at least in theory. Having read the spoiler, am I the only one who thinks they should've called Torment "The Red Set"? Would've been a bit more fitting, or at least that's my first impression.

I still think those 'Tainted' lands are the strangest things I've ever seen. Obviously they are a great addition to Dual Lands IF you're using black. I just don't know if I trust them enough if my deck isn't running tons of swamps. In short, I'm thinking they might not work in the multi-colored decks they would seem most useful for. I really wish those lands 'activated' with their other color's land as well, but I guess that'd be asking too much. :(

If anyone wants to say "but then they'd be broken" . . . bare in mind you're reading the work (work, ha!) of someone who wholeheartedly wishes they'd just stop the nonsense and bring back the real duals.

The true test: Will the new duals work in extended. I'm kind of new to the format, so I could kind of see it either way. Any thoughts?
My final word on the subject: I wonder if they'll make a 'series' of lands like that over subsequent sets? In other words, each color would get duals that pair with the other colors, but only work when the principal basic land type is in play. That might be pretty cool . . .

By Prodigal Whelp on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 01:54 am:

can the faceless butcher target itself?

By Prodigal Whelp on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 02:09 am:

nevermind...

By Puschkin, Defiant Vanguard Against The Phyrexian Invasion (Puschkin) on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 07:58 am:

I fear that Radiate will be in constructed either useless or fuel a combo.
Regardless of that, it will screw up casual play. Drain Life on all creatures and players. Vindicate the whole world. Spinal Embracing all creatures. Haunting Echoes/Traumatize is stupid enough without this.
Note that, like Fork, you don´t have to play the other spell yourself.

I am still busy convincing my group to let their Haunting Echoes at home and now this ...

By General Talon on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 02:59 pm:

Radiate an X damage spell. (CoP)
Radiate a Land Destruction spell. Redgeddon
Radiate a Counterspell in a Counterspell battle, and misdirection the one at the spell you want cast back at something.
Radiate a Spinal Embrace.
Radiate a Barrellling Attack (Let's See if anyone's heard of that one)
Radiate a Skull Scorch.

I think that Cabal Coffers, Combined with Cabal Ritual, is going to be trouble. I don't want to be on the receiving end of a drain life from that.

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 03:44 pm:

I love those lands. The only reason I can think of why they won't print them for every color is that would make 20 different lands total.

-Rico

By JP 'Polluted' Meyer, the Archivist (Jpmeyer) on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 - 05:02 pm:

Radiate Spinal Embrace! OMG!

By Nerdy-Nedry on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 10:09 am:

I think that radiate will probably turn out to be as useful as Mirari - that is only in theory and rarely in actual play. Who knows though, I could be eating my words if some sad-arsed combo is created using radiate. All I know is that it can easily be countered :->

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 11:15 am:

Radiate Temporal Spring.

Put all permanents back on top of their owner's library, and YOU choose the order.

Radiate AEther Mutation.

Bounce every creature AND get gobs of Saprolings.

Declare an attack with all your creatures, then Radiate a Backlash.

Tap all possible blockers AND do damage to their controller, while your tapped attackers escape unscathed.

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 11:45 am:

I see someone has been doing their Radiate homework. :)

-Rico

By WuRaider on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 02:04 pm:

just out of curiousity (I am horrible when it comes to spells being on stack and resolving in order for other effects to occur), if you Radiated an AEther Mutation, wouldnt everything be bounced including the new tokens you make? Or are the tokens made after resoltion of the card.

By War Wolf (Warwolf) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 02:51 pm:

When Radiate resolves, the tokens are not yet made. Radiate stacks a bunch of copies of Mutation, but since the tokens are not in play yet because the Mutation hasn't resolved, you can't target them.

By Henge Wolf (Wolf) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 03:12 pm:

I think I'd like it if they made 15 more "tainted" style duals . . . although I'm starting to question whether they are better than a pain-land. They also pair up horribly with other non-basics, they are essentially screaming for a deck with lots of swamps and few non-basics. I can see this sort of bad opening draw: 2 Tainted Wood, Forest, 3 black cards, 1 green card. They suck on the first turn, and they can still be bad into the second and third. They kind of remind me of a weaker, or at least different, Reflecting Pool. I hope I'm being pessimistic . . . I want them to work dammit!

-HengeWolf

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 04:00 pm:

My last Radiate suggestion, multi-player only.

Radiate a Time Stretch.

Every player gets 2 consecutive turns; YOU decide in which order they get their turns.

A powerhouse it's not, but it sure is silly!

By Rico Jones, Elfman Extraordinaire (Rico) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 04:34 pm:

WestWycke: I can't wait. I'm gonna have so much fun with that card.

Hengewolf: I really want to try those tainted lands out. They are probably good for mainly black decks that only splash other colors. Though I can't see them being of much use in a deck with more colors than that. I love that they work with dual lands. Ahh the beauty.

Anybody use Decimate in multiplayer? I've wanted to but haven't picked any up yet. Gosh that looks sick.

-Rico

By WestWycke, the Lexicologist (Westwycke) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 05:28 pm:

BTW, HengeWolf, which one of the "tainted" duals do you not want to see?

There are 16 possible combinations left, and you only want to see 15 of them...... :)

By Henge Wolf (Wolf) on Thursday, January 24, 2002 - 11:13 pm:

Well, naturally I'd rather not see the U/W one that triggers due to islands in play. I think Tundra is quite enough for those counter-wrath wielding bastards. :)

I've been using a lot of 'colorful' language lately . . . but why? Have I deteriorated to the level of a mere beast? A troll perhaps? First I miscount a dual land total, and now this! :(
