The top says it all.
Come on people!
learn to use a search engine. we aren't at your beck and call.
Take a look at the restricted list. About half of the newer stuff on there is because of Academy. Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Grim Monolith, Lotus Petal. Academy, Frantic Search, and Time Spiral too.
For future reference, at least try to provide a decklist of your own, no matter how suboptimal it may be, people will take to you kindlier that way.
Im just curious what it looked like.
It's broken, OK? you really don't need to be very smart to assemble a list. You just need to know how the restricted/banned list looked back then. After reading this thread I decided to try it out for a laugh and that... thing... won always in 3 turns, and could even go turn 1 kill...
...and it wasn't tuned!! It was my first draft of it!
the t2 was something like this:
4 lotus petal
4 mox diamond
4 mana vault
4 stroke of genius
4 time spiral
can't remember the rest
Also pack Meditates, which are great in combo.
Do you want one before _anything_ was restricted?
Assuming no restrictions, the following is basically the best deck that exists.
4 Frantic Search, Hurkl's Recall, Windfall, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall
4 Force of Will, Misdirection
3 Merchant Scroll
1 Stroke of Genius
It's really stupid and looks like it runs some janky cards, but it's the version that gets around walls of counters best. I forget who had it, but someone a few nights ago was playing a U/G deck that was really hard to get around, and this deck did it even before sideboarding. You only want one Mind over Matter, really, and 4 Frantic Search is almost as good.
Nah, this is better:
4 Tolarian Academy
4 Black Lotus
4 Mox Pearl
4 Mox Emerald
4 Mox Sapphire
4 Mox Jet
4 Mox Ruby
4 Sol Ring
4 Time Walk
4 Ancestral Recall
4 Force of Will
4 Stroke of Genius
3 Mind Over Matter
1 Capsize (needed--returns other Academys, and Ivory Mask)
You have me on Capsize and Time Walk. Capsize goes in for a Merchant Scroll, and I don't know where Time Walk fits in. I don't think you need 4 Walks though- two is probably enough to go infinite, wouldn't you think?
The problem is that you don't want Stroke until you're ready to kill, so I just run the one and some Merchant Scrolls instead. The problem that I have with the Stroke/MoM engine is that it doesn't help you at all before the combo. Why bother then?
Don't you think that 28 mana artifacts is overkill? I got that feeling when I tried it with the full complement of LoMoxen- too many hands with just mana- so I cut the Rings becuase Moxen are easier to Hurk. I'm very convinced though that you want Windfall and the Recalls- they're so powerful it's sick. Windfall is needed as counter bait if you fizzle on your first try.
The question is how we fit in Time Walk while still having 8 draw-seven cards to get around control decks. If we can do that while still going off consistently on turn one, we're in good shape.
OK, I just built this, and it's just about what I want.
4 LoMoxen, Academy, Force, Misdirect
4 Ancestral, Twister, Windfall
3 Merchant Scroll, Mind over Matter
2 Time Walk
1 Frantic Search, Hurkyl's Recall, Rescind, Stroke of Genius
This is basically almost perfect. 2 Time Walk is enough to have infinite turns. The single Hurk saves you in wierd situations where you run out of mana and can't find an Academy, and the single Frantic saves you when you run out of mana and can't find a MoM. I'd like to go down to only two Mind over Matters, but it seems risky. It takes this version forever to go off, but it works a lot better than the above version I listed.
Time Walk: You're probably right, if Time Walk is needed at all, 2 are probably enough.
Stroke: I'm not even really considering going to less than 4. They're NOT just for the kill, they're amazing with all the fast mana in the deck. _Most_ of the time I Stroke it's on myself.
Merchant Scroll: I'm not convinced that it's more worthwhile than anything else I'm using.
28 mana artifacts: If you get a Stroke/Twister in your opening hand with lots of mana artifacts, its fine if your opponent doesn't have more pitch counters (and misdirections) than you (and ways to cast them). This happens too often though in a format like this, so I think I'll cut 2-4 off-color Moxen, _not_ Sol Ring. I don't play Hurkyl's Recall, so Sol Ring is just better (and I'd probably play Sol Ring over the off-color Moxen even if I played one).
Windfall: I thought about this, but I'd probably play Wheel instead. I think I'll drop 4 Jets/Pearls/Emeralds (not for of each ) for 4 Whells.
Frantic Searh/Hurkyl's Recall: I really don't think these are needed.
Rescind/Capsize: I prefer Capsize, as it can be sick in this deck. On the other hand, there probably won't be more than one permanent you need to bounce... I'll consider it.
would 4 Time Spiral be a good choice?
I did not mean without restrictions, I meant what it looked like in type 1 before academy was restricted.
