Happy Hunting,

P.S. In this Tournament, Mind Twist IS Misdirectable. :)

By The Maxx,. the Guru of Foolishness (Maxx) on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 04:59 pm:

OK, it has been called to my attention that there were some problems, so this is not the complete list....

*mumbles*

The Maxx

By The Maxx,. the Guru of Foolishness (Maxx) on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 05:25 pm:

I found the problem. When some people mailed me the decks in .dec format, my email account blocked all of the incoming mail, once it reached it capacity. There are still a few more. K-Run, WK, Chaos, at least are still ont up there. I'll try to fix it quick, Sorry.

The Maxx

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 10:42 pm:

Feed Parrot to me and I shall allow the rest of you to go free.

By Burning Ice, the Elementalist (Burningice) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 02:43 am:

Maxx: If you have 31 and would like a round number, tell me and you'll have a decklist. Otherwise, I don't mind forgetting to email you :)

By The Maxx,. the Guru of Foolishness (Maxx) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 04:45 am:

The only problem with that Burning Ice, is that you already know everyone else's deck. That's really an unfair advantage.

The Maxx

P.S. It's almost fixed, so be patient.

By Deranged Parrot (Parrot) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 09:28 am:

Az, you're freaking me out. And I know you'll smash me, that's ok. I was about right in my prediction of the metagame, and I'm not dissapointed... *evil grin*

I almost called my deck SuicideSquad.dec, but then I realized that I'd probably win against the people who dared to play aggressive decks.

By Elrond, the High Priest & Pokemon Slayer (Elrond) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 10:42 am:

Am I playing an aggressive deck? Sometimes, I'm not quite sure :)

I'll have to read into more detail tomorrow but I think this is the most interesting field we have had yet.

By Sylvester (Sylvester) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 10:47 am:

pretty rogue, anyway! 8)
I don't know how i'll fare, because i assumed a much mroe "standard" environment... My totems are gonna suck, i think...

By Burning Ice, the Elementalist (Burningice) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 11:16 am:

Maxx: true, but I'll send it the exact deck I used last t1toc, just with one change. Not really that big a deal (I noticed last toc that I was ALWAYS SBing two misdirections. So they go Maindeck and 2 Gainsays go in the sideboard.) Up to you though.

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 12:17 pm:

Parrot:

One, two, Azhrei's coming for you.
Three, four, better lock your door.
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, better stay up late.
Nine, ten, never sleep again.

;)

Elrond:

Too damn many Tormod's Crypts! :P

By Jelal (Jelal) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 01:41 pm:

LOL Az.

I just realized how stupid it was of me to sideboard 'Cores ;).

Here are the additional decks that didn't make it up there the first time. Sorry for the delay, pairings should be up later tonight. Acolytec won't be back from Vacation until July 7th, I think. Round 1 deadline is temporarily set for July 10th. Every other round will be shorter, however. I'm thinking a week per round.

Too bad I don't have the time to join. Some of you guys have over-metagamed but it's nice and reassuring to know that only two people are playing the lamest deck.

Good luck to all!

By Deranged Parrot (Parrot) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 07:26 pm:

Az, you realize the sad panda that you have made me.

:-(

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, and I look forward to playing against a very sportsmanlike opponent. :-P

By Big Blue on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 07:59 pm:

You know, if Senator Palpertin (AKA The Emperor) played Magic, he would play mono-U... I can only say: Good Luck to all Combo-Jedis and may the FoW not be against you...

Interesting field, indeed:
6 Keeper
6 mono-B
4 COMBO
4 Zoo/Sligh/SRB
4 "creative"/Oath
and only
3 mono-U (one of which is by no means close to a "standard" mono-U).

I mean, that's a very subtle possibility to "prove" that accelerated.blue is NOT the best deck: If everybody refuses to play it, it will definitely not make it to the top 8...

Here some comments and wishes (of course it is kind of cheap for someone who does not participate to critisize other decks, but since many choices appear to me, umm, rather creative I would naturally be interested in your replies):

1. Meridian: Interesting SB choices - 4 Mana Short? What do you plan to SB against control - 15 cards?!
My wish for you: Start with Lotus, Mox Pearl, FoW, Impulse, Abeyance, Mana Crypt, Timetwister against Acolytec and Parrot :)

2. Alhazard: Goblin Grenade... Well, we will see. I believe, Cursed Scroll main is maybe better, but who knows?
My wish for you: Start with Marsh Mansion, 4 Deep Ones, Shoggoth, Father Dagon, Mother Hydra, Jeremiah Brewster, Robert Marsh, Esoteric Order of Dagon, Dynamite, Secret Cache and let your opponent loose 20+ sanity in the first round...

3. Elrond: Interesting design - but no Hyppies?! Necro should be main, IMHO. Funny "transformational" SB (Necrotubbies?).
My wish for you: Start with Swamp, Duress, Lotus, Dark Ritual, Will, Negator, Nether Void... Dang, no Negator in your deck!

4. Azhrei: A tourney with no time limit and Oath... Please edit your logfiles before posting them :) I am looking forward to see your performance versus control (it is always nice to see a new deck of you, BTW).
My wish for you is, that you shall not be paired against Bogey - without 4 Land Taxes Nether Void is a rather tough matchup, I believe.

5. URMage: Good deck (quite similar to the one Azhrei posted some time ago, if I am not mistaken). Enough to beat control? Time will tell...
Here my wish: Blast your way through the Wall of Blue!

6. Ahh, Keeper! Always nice to watch. I am curious, how Vindicate will perform. BTW, I would have swapped Moat/Zorb MD/SB. Viashino Heretic is, er, creative.
My wish for you is that you shall avoid opposing Wastelands.

7. mono-U Fly'n'Sligh - Psi Blasts are very nice - black is going to hate you for this card. Against control I forsee some problems, however. 20 Islands?! I can understand easily the first 16, and maybe even #17 or #18. But 20? Wouldn't be some Strip/Waste/LoA/Factory-combination much better in the last 2-4 slots? But ok, you are non-Wasteable at least.
My wish for you: That your opponents draw 4 Wastelands in their initial hand and never ever a LoA.

8. Bogey: Don't you run into mana problems from time to time?
My wish for you: Start with Swamp, Duress, Lotus, Dark Ritual, Will, Negator, Nether Void... Dang, no Will in your deck!

9. Tir: I have great respect for people playing combo in the Blue Era. I have no idea how your deck works, though, but I shall be glad to read your first logfile.
My wish (apart from the preamble): Don't just injure control decks, insult them!

10. Arex: I don't know if the concept works - it seems a bit unfocused, though Duress might be the Killer Card versus control. You get style points for Mystic Remora in SB - I love that tech!
My wish is that you can force through a Y. Will in each of your games - should be fun with all the 1cc spells :)

11. Acolytec, The Emperor: I still believe that 26 is 2 away from optimum (and I don't want to imply 24), but, wow, Black Vise and Grindstones (isn't that this strange artifact which reads 1,TAP: Bury target Parrot if it is blue?)
I simply wish you fun and exciting games (despite your deck), since you won't need much luck with it - hey, it's ok to play the best deck available :)

12. Bob: Please, please, teach control a lesson... You almost did it last time. Just out of curiosity (I always ask that question when I see 20 basic lands in a T1 deck): Why not only 16+some Strip/Wastes (or even Factories, if you don't like Wastes)? Right, against mono-U Wasteland... well, nomen est omen. But Strip Mine? Not that LoA is a big thread against you, but it is such a good card in aggro decks, especially against control.
My wish is that your first loss will be against combo in the finals, implying that your performance is such that you make it to the finals :)

13. Begbie: I like the FoF and Duress counts of your deck - 3 seems just perfect, IMO - I don't know why, just a feeling. Isn't the Tundra count a bit an overkill? I think, 2 should suffice - I mean, your SB is RED and not WHITE (apart from Moat, of course - but I am not sure Moat is really needed in a Keeper SB - Abyss, Keg, Blasts and 1-2 spot removal are usually sufficient). But this is probably of minor importance (though I predict that you are going to miss the 4th Vulcanic!)
My wish is that your mana flows the way you like it, i.e. if you draw a Sylvan you also draw Mox Emerald, if you draw a Duress you also draw Mox Jet and the same for Balance and Mox Pearl.

14. Ultimage: Nomen est omen? - I mean, does it really work? Why no 2/1 critters like Pups? And why no Black Vise (at least in SB)?
I wish you some nice fireworks and, umm, no opposing Ivory Mask or COP: Red.

15. Tom M: Yeah, combo! I just fear, that 4 REBs are not enough to push your key cards through the counterwalls. Have you tried Bazaar in your playtesting?
My wish is, that your restricted cards conspire to explosive hands against control.

16. CooberP: Reflecting Pool? Just hope, you don't run into Sinkholes! I mean, 1 for fun like my single Undiscovered Paradise to give the deck a personal touch, ok - but 4?! MD Karn is worth some style points and of course your SB City of Solitude!
I wish that you win at least one game caused by City of Solitude!

17. ThaWise: I have never seen a Bridge in my life, so I cannot comment the creative part of your deck - the rest looks pretty solid, except that I don't understand, why you run only 2 Wastes. But that's at least 2 more than Bob...
I wish you Matt's luck with the Hymmns.

18. Jelal: Nobody can accuse you of having metagamed against Sligh... You can only hope to avoid those parings... Null Rod instead of Keg is of course an interesting choice.
I wish you 7 Arena-turns in each game - this should be enough for an easy victory...

19. Brimstone Dragon: So you are one of the few 2 FoF guys? And Moat maindeck... I don't know, maybe I am like Aesop's fox, since I don't have a Moat (and hence it is not as sweet), but I think I wouldn't include it MD even if I had one.
I wish that you never miss mana #28 and some fun with the Augury.

20. Gzeiger: Yeah, combo! But why the Bayou?!? And Diminishing Returns can hurt you quite a bit - possibly removing all kill cards from the game can be inconvenient. Lim Dul's Vault is an interesting choice (those glorious Turbo Stasis times!), but isn't Impulse simply better?
I wish you all the explosiveness you need to beat control.

21. Sylvester: I have no idea what your deck does, since I don't know some of the (key?)cards - e.g. Gamble. But I will be very interested in your logfiles.
I wish you the "Parfait-factor", i.e. the surprising performance of a "Rogue"-deck - and of course, in that case you will have to write a primer afterwards (HowTo Overkill...) :)

22. Redman: Control is going to hate you for the Mages, the Chant/Abeyances and the Orb/Armageddon. Beautiful deck, though not "bug-free", IMHO.
E.g. I don't understand some of your SB choices - Dismantling Blow?! In Keeper, ok, you MUST have something to destroy an enchantment, just in case, and I can understand exactly 1 Blow MD. But in the SB? Seal/Disenchant/Aura is strictly better, if you really intend to destroy an artifact/enchantment. And Null Rod... Why not main, instead of the Winter Orbs to shut down Moxen/Keg/Disk?
I wish you many well-timed Armageddons and fun with the Mage!

23. JP: (What is Yavimaya Coast?) It's a shame that you chose such an unPATRIOTic deck. Choke is a good choice - I hope it helps. But I think REBs would have been better (of course, then it would be more like ReallyDK). Another Moat MD... And another member of the 2 FoF clique...
I wish you more luck than in the last ToC - it was sad to read the logfiles at the point when you explained to the other guy (sorry, don't remember the name) how you will loose. Or better, I wish you less bad luck. This should suffice :)

24. DerangedParrot: Merchant Scrolls with all that redundancy? I think, Impulse would have been better in that slot. Or the 2 SB Wastelands for the 28 mana count. But I guess you have good reasons for the Scrolls?! Maybe the same reason why some people like jogging with weigths: Just to make it more challenging...
My wish is that you shall avoid Acolytec and his 1,TAP:KilltargetParrotifitisblue-artifacts. And of course, have some fun, too.

25. Mako Satou: Masticore is interesting, but Factory (Spring or Neap) is suboptimal, IMHO. Compost is good - in that environment you could have played with 2-3!
I wish you beautiful victories over those mono-B beasts - your SB makes it possible.

26. ETP: You get 100 style points for this deck. It is not the best deck in the toruney, but killing the opponent with a Berserking Mighty Bird of Paradise is definitely FUN!
I wish you a second turn kill with a Berserking Bird - it is possible...

27. The Maxx: LoA - lol! But seriously, do you think it pays in this deck? And isn't 5 Strip/Waste+4 Sinkholes a bit light on the LD side (considering that you do not have any Ports)? Death Grip and Tormod's Crypt are a bit astonishing.
My wish for you: Start with Swamp, Duress, Lotus, Dark Ritual, Will, Negator, Nether Void... Hey, you are the only one, where this works!

28. HavoK Dark: Nice, a second Oath deck! Hope, you don't have to play the Mirror(s) :) I just don't understand the idea behind Rancor in this deck - I mean, you are not attemting to play this like Stompy, right? And the free slots could have been used for, well, more useful cards. The SB provides several style points - Mahamoti AND Rainbow Efreet, wow! Must be fun to play against Eureka with all those beasts.
I wish you a triple rancored Mahamoti eating opposing Morphlings alive :)

ok, TTFN.

By Deranged Parrot (Parrot) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 10:16 pm:

Big Blue, Merchant Scroll is basically Demonic Tutor in this deck. It lets you play 3 Ancestral Recall, 6 Mana Drain, 6 Force of Will, etc, and is very very good. Trust me. It comes in handy in the wierdest situations. Also, with 3 Ancestrals, 26 mana is about right.

By the way, everyone who is playing Impulse in mono-blue needs to test Merchant Scroll first. They do the same thing, but Scroll is just amazingly better at it. I do agree now that the deck needs some search, but Impulse is not it.

If Jelal had played blue though(and he almost did....) we would have had Emporor Acolytec, Darth Parrot, and Grand Moff Jelal, and that would have been rather funny. I'm not sure if Az could have stood up to the complete power of the Dark Side®....

By Sylvester (Sylvester) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 11:38 pm:

OUCH... you sure adh time on your hands, Big blue 8)

Well, on my deck: it's basically, stabilize, and go phoenix beatdown/hammer recursion
To stabilize, you use moat, blood moon, principally, and if needed, the li'l one ofs+2 in the SB. I thought i'd face MUCH blue, or at least key blue cards, so i went with so many blasts... I also thought tubbies would be popular 8(

Anyway, yes, i'll tyr to remember to keep the log...(singular:i don't tihnk i can go past round 1 8)

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 11:48 pm:

I *had* Negators over Juzams when I gave him that list. Workshops = Turbo-Disk against control.

4. Azhrei: A tourney with no time limit and Oath... Please edit your logfiles before posting them I am looking forward to see your performance versus control (it is always nice to see a new deck of you, BTW).
My wish for you is, that you shall not be paired against Bogey - without 4 Land Taxes Nether Void is a rather tough matchup, I believe.

Meridian and I made this together. If it sucks, it was the part he made. ;) I fear not Nether Void, but maybe I should. ;)

5. URMage: Good deck (quite similar to the one Azhrei posted some time ago, if I am not mistaken). Enough to beat control? Time will tell...
Here my wish: Blast your way through the Wall of Blue!

That IS my deck, and URMage is an Iron Chef. He'll get through control sure enough.

Another Azhrei original comes to you-- and it's JUST the right call in this field too. D. Blow might be better as something else, but I doubt it. ;)

"If Jelal had played blue though(and he almost did....) we would have had Emporor Acolytec, Darth Parrot, and Grand Moff Jelal, and that would have been rather funny. I'm not sure if Az could have stood up to the complete power of the Dark Side®...."

I will feast upon your still beating heart, Parrot. Polly want a cracker?

By Big Blue on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:00 am:

Addendum:

29. Ice Blue Zoo with the deck Burning Ice (or the other way round): Rootwater Thief! And 4 FoW&4Misdirection! And Psi Blasts - I really like the deck. Though only 1 Keg seems a bit fragile. Is Windfall really good in that deck? Your SB seems a bit overloaded with SUSE, er, Red-hate.
I wish you first turn thieves with FoW backup against all control decks, though I am not sure if this is sufficient for victory.

30. White Knight: Again, no Strip/Wastes - this was always my problem in my attempts on WW - there seems to be little/no space for LD. What about Lotus Petal and Mox Diamond? They "combo" perfectly with Land Tax and are not that terrible by themselves for first turn critters. All StoPs in the SB... Oh, the metagame! Warmth? Is not Honorable Passage better for this slot (I mean, Warmth is perfect against SRB and good against Sligh, but versus Zoo I believe the Passage is superior).
I wish you rock solid Armors with Tax backup, Defender of the Purest of all Colours!

31. K-Run: Masticores? That's not part of your primer versions, is it? And all the Abeyances banished to the SB? Anyway, good to see you back with your ingenious creation.
I wish you a performance like in the pre-last ToC, where you managed to surprise a whole community.

32. Chaos: I am not going to repeat my 20-question. Tome seems like a draw-overkill, but control definitely should counter it... Dissipate is a card I don't like - I mean, there is even little space for Counterspells in state-of-the-art mono-U, let alone suboptimal versions of it. And I think even the Emperor and Darth Parrot agree on 22 mana not being enough, though at least all your lands are non-wasteable.
Mirror Universe looks like a wasted slot, but I have respect for your choice of Pis Blasts - against mono-B they are a nasty surprise.
I wish you all the mana you need (and you need a LOT!).

Parrot: I strongly disagree. You cannot fetch Morphling/Masticore/Powder Keg, each of which often turns out to be a last-minute saver. With Impulse you have at least a chance to grab one. I concede that playing Ancestral more often surely pays. But my main objection is that it is a Sorcery - would it be an Instant, hey, I would even include it in my Keeper deck (yes, I have tried it for 2 weeks and removed it afterwards). But with only UU free (or even U1) you usually want to keep the mana untapped. But maybe your logfiles will convince me :)

Sylvester: Yes, I had some time... My wife was on night-shift in the hospital and my children went to sleep rather early. And after 1 week on a sub-tropical Island I really wanted to do something on my computer...

Azhrei: Hehe, you are kind of proud of your decks, aren't you? Well, with 4 (or more?) of them you have good chances of watching one of your babies winning :)
Concerning good/bad matchups: Maybe this is again an example of selective perception, but I often made the experience that I tend to win my difficult matchups (e.g. winning with non-dark Keeper versus good mono-U) and to loose the "easy" ones (e.g. loosing with good mono-U versus bad combo) - but maybe I don't concentrate enough in the easy ones... So, all I want to say is: Beware of the Dark Side, despite your deck :)

By White Knight (White_Knight) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 08:53 am:

Well, I'm very sorry for not fitting a Strip Mine and Wasteland. Once I was totally stopped by an unexpected Glacial Chasm (Lich).

Lotus Petal is something I can test and Mox diamond, although it's good with land tax, takes me away a land drop that I'll surelly need. Since I usually had little mana in the beginning drawing a land instead of diamond will be more helpfull.

Warmth stops SRB better (they can be nightmare), although I might come to test Honorable Passage/Samite Ministration instead of them.

In my most recent version Armors are off, so this might be the last time I actually play with them...

K-Run: Love the masticores!!!

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 02:27 pm:

Well here is my 'big blue' review of the field

1) meridian: Academy.. feh.
2) Alhazard: what the hell is Fireblasy?
3) Elrond: obviously azhrei made your deck.. nice name.
4) Azrei: seems like az made your deck too. Personally i think you should have put in a few plow unders.
5)URmage: who ever heard of jackal pups in sligh?
6) Manic: keeper. I've never seen it.. but i hear its not that good.
7) Tyger: perhaps the only deck with a guaranteed chance of beating its round one opponent (see the pairings for details)
8-12) nothing special in this group
13) Begbie: wow, another keeper.. its great to see the rogue decks coming out.
14-20) these decks are pretty much all the same.
21) Sylvester: Where are the counterspells?
22)Redman: another azhrei inspired title.
23) wow, another keeper... this just keeps getting more and more weird.
24) mrparrot.. you dissapoint us all.
25) Mako Sotou: beauty and the beast.. i dont get it.
26) ETP... you make me sick and sad.. what were you thinking. You have decks that dont suck.. why couldnt you have picked one of those. Shut up, dont feed me that 'I panicked' line again. well at least you didnt choose mono-U.
27) TheMaxx: i feel that hypnotic spectres are wrong for this deck, since ornithopters have so much more synergy with abyss, and nethervoid.
28) Havok: well, thank god your not playing with counterspells, or else that deck could be end up being really boring to play against.
29) Burning Ice: i think the deck needs another fact or fiction.
30) Wknight: my pick for the tourney winner.. white weenie is definetely due.
31) K-Run: parfait is good, but i feel its just a rip-off of sligh.
32) Chaos: may you roast for playing the deck of cowards.. thankfully there is plenty of quick black decks that you can hit on your way down.. no offence.. but i hope you draw all land.

there you have it.. the definitive guide to the toc.

By Meridian (Meridian) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 02:29 pm:

1. Meridian: Interesting SB choices - 4 Mana Short? What do you plan to SB against control - 15 cards?!

My sideboard might as well have been 2 abeyances, 1 seal, and 12 mountains, as those three cards are the only ones I ever intend to side. The other cards were just to take up slots :P

By Sssmwc (Sssmwc) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 08:03 pm:

What is the kill method for turbo spaz?

By Andrew, the Sphinx Slayer (Andrew) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 09:14 pm:

Well, once you have Dhalls and Bargain out, you cast denying winds alot. Then you say 'go'.

By Elrond, the High Priest & Pokemon Slayer (Elrond) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 10:58 pm:

Az did have Negators in the deck but I replaced them with Juzams when I saw how many aggro decks were going to be played. Almost everyone I heard talking about this ToC said they were playing something very aggressive. I think I made the right choice, if not I'll know soon enough :)

By Christoph on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 01:12 pm:

@urmage and azhrei: First I have to say, that I like your decks or better say your deck. But why you don't replace a Mountain with a Lotus ?

--Christoph

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 02:44 pm:

That's a good question, but not one you should be asking me. :P

My guess is that IRL that's the deck, since he borrows my Ruby but not my Lotus.

By Lord Fril (Fril) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 04:55 pm:

siricco, i have never seen this card before. i wonder why it was never played in sligh before. its like a red duress alsmost!

By JP 'Polluted' Meyer, the Archivist (Jpmeyer) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 06:29 pm:

Or Tirx can cast a big ass Windfall after casting Denying Wind enough times.

By Sylvester (Sylvester) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 10:58 pm:

JP:Tirx has a tendency of drawing all of its cards when going off 8)

By Sylvester (Sylvester) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 11:00 pm:

Oh, and, ETP: No counters, bc, well...i don't think my mana base can afford it ;-)

By JP 'Polluted' Meyer, the Archivist (Jpmeyer) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 11:13 pm:

Yeah, but Tirx needs to recurse Timetwister to keep casting Denying Wind. So after you've gone through like 4 Denying Winds or so you can just Bargain over the number of cards left in their deck and Windfall for the kill.

Or you could be a little bitch and either Ancestral them or kill them with Timetwister.

By Sylvester (Sylvester) on Monday, July 02, 2001 - 11:15 pm:

Yeah...

I've only seen it in action once 8(

That's one more reason ivory mask should have been in my SB 8)
