3 x Mountain
4 x City of Brass
3 x Badland
2 x Wasteland
1 x Tolarian Academy
1 x Library of Alexandria
1 x Strip Mine

We had 14 people in attendence and could hit the 20 mark for next month depending on when Azhrei and others return from college. The field had the usual red burn, a couple of Jank type decks, SliverKing with STP, Jay w/ Nethervoid, Black ld/hand destruction, Zoo, T1 Skies (w/ 'dibs, waterspout djinns etc), a truly diverse field.

One sidenote...I played on 4 hours sleep extremely hungover :( so the details of the reports are not going to be exact of thorough, instead I will try to relate the "critical turn"

So its 3 rounds of swiss cut to top 8...

Round 1
Kevin w/ Skies
I get an active welder on the table cycling a monolith with a masticore to generate the mana necessary to ping 'dibs and djinns for 4. Really tough match up against a good player. Game 3 was won when he held a Lotus in his hand instead of playing and couldn't regenerate the Masticore he had taken with Legacy's Allure.

Round 2
Jay with NetherVoid
Jay didn't see a Void either game. We had done a lot of playtesting together working on the decks and his is a really tough matchup for me esp. after SB. More of a case of bad draws for him then anything. One interesting play...I get a 2nd turn Covetous Dragon off of 2 lands a Vault and he disenchants Vault :( I end up playing Yawgmoth's Win :) and replay Ancestral, and Time Walk.

Round 3
Robert E with Zoo
While I had some suboptimal draws, Robert rolled all over me, a real blood letting..the 'dibs and Erhnams he has are too fat for most of my removal and the lone fireball I have isn't enough. No real critical turn here folks.

Top 8
Chuck with T1 Jank (r/w)
It all comes down to Yawgmoth's Will (the most broken card in any powered up T1 deck). Being able to Will, play Mox, Land, Ancestral, Time Walk, FoF, and Demonic Tutor in one turn makes for fun luvin. Chuck is another great player from a neighboring store in Mechanicsville.

Top 4
Alex with Mono Black
In the 2nd game I strip his first land (like he had hoped he later told me) and proceeded to Hymn, strip, waste, and sinkhole another 6 lands. :( I was one turn away from stabilizing and getting off a main phase FoF but he Hyppied my Vault.

I can't complain at all with my performance. I get a pack of Apocalypse and a pack of Saga for my efforts (popping a Mystic Snake and an Energy Field which is good for the extended deck I want to build). One lesson learned from today is I really want Crumbling Sanctuary in the deck...against Zoo and mono black it is a great way to stabilize until you draw the mass removal. I also would like to have Abyss in the deck or SB.

Suggestions? I don't have a Lotus otherwise it would be in there.

Who won the whole thing? I ended up going 1-2.

Though I know this is fairly unrelated, what is your opinion on Zoo? It seems he was playing the Fat version (which most likely requires full Jewelry) but do you happen to know how well he did, and if he was playing more than R/U/G. Thanks. Any information at all would be appreciated.

Im interested in how the big Zoo deck did too, since my version of the deck, Old Faithful, is one of my all time fav decks in any format....

Like to see the home team win a few, after all

I believe the type1 skies and mono black split in the finals. The zoo deck lost in t4 to skies I believe. It ran really well since the dibs and ernhams have big backsides it generally takes 2 burn spells to get rid of them. He did have some difficulty getting to 2 blue sources for his drains but it seemed to run pretty well. It was powered up with in color jewelry running a u/g/r build.

there seemed to be a lot more blue than normal this time wasnt there.

I think there were a couple of more decks with a blue element but no true "blue" or BBS deck..control was still very much absent as was combo.

By Spin13 (Spin13) on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 09:39 pm:

Hmm, so it looks like Zoo is still the effective deck it was...in the absense of control. Its Zoo's whole problem of dealing with Abyss, and green and white being too weak to provide Pro:Blacks. What Zoo, in a control environment, needs, is a non-wastable Artifact (Creature?) that deals damage... Vise?

The control in the enviroment is going to turned up with Azhrei coming back next month and bringing OSE with him. I will probably side in Abyss next time out (I can kill with Masticore or Karn also).

By Anxiety (Anxiety) on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 11:10 pm:

Nah, if Zoo is having problems with JUST Abyss, not Moat, then it just needs to board in Dense Foliage. That becomes a must counter spell for the Abyss-toting player. Assuming that person has counters, of course..

What does the text say on Dense Foilage? I'm not familiar with it. What I do need to pick up is City in a Bottle since I lost to Robert in Swiss w/ his 4 original 'Dibs 4 original Erhnams original cities and Library:)

I didn't see the other semi final match up (too busy getting whipped by mono black) but the Zoo whipped me good in the last round of swiss.
