By Zherbus (Zherbus) on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 10:37 am:

After a few hours of playtesting T2, and some unsuccessful trading endeavors, the tournament starts.

First round: I'm playing against a B/G LD deck with juggernauts ( ! ) (Side note: this deck would have been better if he had been lighter on the green, and used discard)

Game 1:

I win the die roll, and play a tundra. He strips it. I'm rather mana light, I play a brainstorm in response. I play a tropical island, he lays a swamp, cool no ritual or duress. I play a mishra, tap and play Oath of Druids. He mutters some, then next turn plays a bayou and ritual's out a juggernaut. Thank you very much. I get a spike weaver out to hold that jug off until morphling comes out to play. I dismantling blow one of his jugs with kicker and draw a edict and a mana drain. Game ends.

Game 2: (in goes teferi's response, out goes counterspell)

He goes first, strip mine...wonderful. I play scrubland as strip bait, he doesn’t take it... fine by me. He plays a wasteland next turn. SOB! I play tropical Island and sapphire. He strips the trop, I use teferi’s response and draw a mana drain. He strips the scrubland. ( He announced stripping both lands at once) I have 2 mana, he has zip.
He next rituals out an icequake, its mana drained.

" How many cards in your hand?"

"4"

*Plays Underground sea, and taps out minus the tropical.*

" Mindtwist you for four."

I eventually hard cast a morphling, and kill him.

Next round: Suicide black (Yummy)

He wins the roll, awesome.

Swamp ritual, carnophage, sarcomancy, unholy strength. Cute.

I go, tropical, pearl, oath of druids.

He plays another swamp, another ritual, mind twist for 3, I misdirection it. He causes me pain.

I oath, a feeder. Draw, play a sol ring and a tundra.

He goes, draws a edict and foolishly uses it. I gain 4 then take 6. I FoF at the end of turn.

I oath a weaver, and hold him off for a while. Morphling comes out, and spikes keep bouncing in and out of play. Zombie damage and Morphling win.

Game 2:

I'll make it short, I put out a COP: black and wait until Morphling makes a cameo, and win. :)

Round 3: Mono blue (Oh boy.)

Game 1:

I get mangled. Opening hand wasn’t too bad, 3 lands, a mox ruby, a dismantling blow, mana drain, and a swords.

First draw, land.
Second draw, land.
Third draw, land.
Fourth draw, NOT A LAND, a mox.
Firth draw land.

I am horribly out played and don’t even wait to see how quickly I died. I scoop. I couldn’t deal with the BtB who came out. Tried countering it, no love. He had FoW.

Game 2:

Must Be aggro (Out feeder, out zorb, in spirit of the night, and oath #4 )

I play a trop and a mox jet. He plays mox, mox, lotus, land, Morphling. I cast Oath of druids. He FoW. I FoW. He swears. Spirit of the night comes out and ends the match quickly, as he cat get enough mana to make him a 0/7 flier.

Game 3:

Longest match ever...

We play draw go for a while. He lets an oath sneak out. He tries casting a Morphling, I drain, he counters, I counter, he FoW, I FoW. He mutters. My morphling comes out on the drain mana. Morphling kill’s fast and I just hold cards in my hand as I can see my just waiting to mana drain something.

Next round: My friend Pat's LD deck with Abyss's, Hymns, Sinkholes, Mishra's, Waste Lands, War Beasts and Masticores.

Game 1:

I misdirection a hymn, play an oath. He plays a 'core, oath out a morphling then I mind twist the rest of his hand away.

Game 2:

He plays a swamp, ritual, warbeast. I play a sapphire, a tropical island. He attacks, plays a swamp and a sinkhole, I mana drain.

Next turn, I play a tundra, and sack the lotus, for 3 blue, tap the tundra for white and dismantling blow with kicker on the beast, land crippling him. I draw FoF and a sol ring, play the sol ring...blah blah get all sorts of cards, win with a morphling while he tries to recover from land loss.

Next round: Annoying kid who has a hard grasp on speaking clearly, and plays the same predictable deck to some degree of success. (read luck) Sub-optimal sligh. I’ve played against it enough to know he runs no wastelands, and runs ball lightnings. I ask if he’s a guru on mtgnews.

Game 1:

He plays a mountain, and a goblin lackey. (Oh yeah he doesn’t use pup’s either)
I play a tropical and I’m done. He plays another mountain, and attacks. Then plays a free flunky. He cast’s a Mogg fanatic and bolts me. I play a mishra and cast oath of druids. He plays another mountain, and plays a ball lightning, I FoW. He beats me for 5. I oath up a weaver. Fog the next turn, and he bolts it. I oath up a feeder. He attacks for 5, block the lacky, take 4. He incinerates me, bringing me to 4. I sack feeder and oath up a morphling, and hit a gaea’s blessing in the process. I swords his Fanatic, he pings me bringing me to 7. He plays a ball lightning, I mana drain. Next turn I FoF, play a zuran orb, beat him with morphling. He’s too out of steam.

Game 2: (He’ll side in pyroblasts and side out flunkies and probably the lackeys, so Ill side in ivory mask)

He plays Ruby, lotus, mountain, ball lightning, fanatic, lightning bolt. Ouch. I play Tundra, mox emerald, Mox pearl, sol ring and Oath. He untaps, incinerates me, and attacks for one. Flings the fanatic at me for one. I enlighten tutor at the end of turn for mask. Untap, play mask. He untaps and says go. I hard cast a feeder. He bolts, I sack. He casts a ball lightning, I swords it. I hard cast a morphling, no pyroblast…huh. He uses my oath! It gets him a mogg fanatic, after losing 20 or so cards. The rest of the game is anti-climatic. I attack a lot, make it untargetable a lot.

Store credit, I look in the case at the over priced t2 singles. I put it down on my credit slip, in the event he gets something good in someday.

Hey, not ALL gurus on mtgnews run Ball Lightnings with no Wasteland (read: I play 4 Wasteland).

I do get a lot of flack though, which is kinda sad.

Sigh...

Anyway, congrats on the game against mono-U. Oh yea, the rest of the tournie too.

Hmmm... these guru people must have some reputation...

By Zherbus (Zherbus) on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 03:16 pm:

He had it main deck anyways, I imagine he wanted to stop me from oathing, so he was just gonna use the fanatics as crappy bolts.

By Rico Suave on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 04:03 pm:

Why not just run City of Brass over painland?

By acolytec on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 04:38 pm:

I love seeing oath do well. It is such a fun deck. Why didn't the blue player just go for back to basics. You kill oath the same way you kill keeper- oath becomes irrelivant if they have no mana.

By Zherbus (Zherbus) on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 06:05 pm:

I dunno, hopefully if he did I would have been able to win a counter war.

Colorless mana is pretty good when your not taking damage from it by the way.

By Rico Suave on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 10:29 pm:

Yea but if you ever want colored mana, CoB would make whatever color you want for the same price.

Maybe I just don't like Adarkar Wastes in a 4-color deck.

By Sonrik (Sonrik) on Sunday, October 28, 2001 - 04:32 am:

Hi

Enlightened Tutor for Ivory Mask ????

But there's no Enlightened Tutor on your decklist ???

By Zherbus (Zherbus) on Sunday, October 28, 2001 - 09:06 am:

Well I guess thats one difference in the deck in apprentice then, it was easier to take that one than to type out everything. I dont run merchant scroll in my maindeck.

I guess thats the change I never made :( Doesnt matter, Ill turn it into keeper as my abyss and moat get lonely sometimes and need loving too.

Rico, Theres ALOT that I use colorless mana for, thats why my deck can use mana drain and say oh...a countersliver could not effectively.

Pinger lands are preferred, especially in the environment I'm in. If you want to debate over it then by all means make a thread called CoB vs relevant color pain lands.
