Game two can be summed up as:

Tir casts an early Oath. After much deliberation I decide to Force the Oath, pitching a Morphling (only blue card in my hand.) This turned out to be a spectacular play as I topdecked a creature and rode it to victory.

very strange indeed... Mind Twist goes through without question and plays Ancestral on 0 counter backup, yet he counters Merchant Scrol....

::perplexed::

By MoreFling on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 02:13 pm:

and most likely, they now learned something. And that's what this is all about.

By Fragment_One (Frag) on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 06:56 pm:

The Merchant Scroll Counter was so that he could not find his ancestral and cast it when I had a Mind twist in Hand. It also helped fuel the Mind Twist without burning the Lotus.

Any other questions? Thanks.

By Liam (Liam) on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 07:29 pm:

Should let Scroll (or any tutor) resolve, i beleive is the logic, so you can counter the tutor'd-for spell and they don't topdeck it later.

By Fragment_One (Frag) on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 08:05 pm:

That's not always true. Ask Rakso, or Azhrei or JP, and they'll tell you that there are situations where countering a tutor is not a bad play. In this situation it allowed me 2 mana Which i needed to fuel my Mindtwist and it prevented him from getting his Ancestral. If you want to test my skill as a player, then meet me in #bdchat. I'm sure that you will find that I'm pretty decent.

If you want to test my skill as a player, goldfish.

:(

Two well played matches on Frag's side. The
weird thing is, I playtested this again today
vs Pox with 5 strips, sinks, etc, and didn't
have mana problems. Oh well. As MoreFling said,
I learned.

:b...

Everyone knows that the Apprentice shuffler is gay.

I counter tutors under the following conditions:

1) I need Drain mana
2) He uses Mystical and I have REB in hand
3) I expect that it'll get LoA/Obliterate
4) He uses Mystical EoT and he's playing Duress in his SB
5) He has Sylvan out and I assume that he mostly wants the reshuffle

Of course I wouldn't mind burning Lotus on Mind Twist, but a question: Didn't he have Sylvan (I was wondering why he wasn't paying life vs Keeper)?

The logs were a bit painful to read through (split them by turn please?) but I gather Tir should've been in a much better position in game 1?

Without that Sylvan, I think Draining the Merchant Scroll wasn't unreasonable because you could guess Tir had no FoW, after going FoW, pitch Counterspell.

I think, though, that the Ancestral with no FoW backup should've been timed better. First, since it was kinda early in the game, I don't believe you could assume he had no more blue spells even if he had FoW. I mean, Ancestral for 2 counters is close enough to drawing 3 cards, but you didn't know his hand.

Second, that could've walked into Misdirection and you weren't desperate (you had the Mana Drain at the time, I assume).

Wow, that was as fierce a beating as I've seen.

I can agree with the first three, but with number 4 & 5, I definately would not counter the tutor.

By Tir (Tir) on Friday, January 18, 2002 - 02:49 pm:

Well, it was number 5. With Sylvan out and still
seeing no land, it was smart to counter. And
thanks for your support, Matt. :b

By Fragment_One (Frag) on Friday, January 18, 2002 - 03:37 pm:

Well, I must have edited it out of the logs, but another point to make that I have left a bit unclear and even mayve a bit confusing is that I topdecked the Lotus the turn I cast the Twist. So I wasn't expecting to have the extra 3 Lotus Mana when I drained the Merchant Scroll.

By Liam (Liam) on Friday, January 18, 2002 - 04:12 pm:

Hey, that was not an attack, just IMO a rather strange showing of priorities. You have to admit that in the sequence of Ancestral, Mindtwist, Merchant Scroll the Scroll deserves the least counter attention.

By Fragment_One (Frag) on Friday, January 18, 2002 - 07:27 pm:

I cast the Mindtwist. I cast the Ancestral. He cast the Merchant Scroll. What are you talking about Liam?
