By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 10:06 pm:

What is your rating and what is the deck that got you there?

I am at 1744 playing mostly Juzam/control.

I am curious to see what Az, Matt D', K-Run and Rakso are rated at (everyone else too). And really want to know who is at the top here on this site:) I know there are not that many Type One sanctioned events, but still...

By The Singularity Eliminator (Sylvester) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 11:22 pm:

supposedly, i'd be 1600 atm ;)

By Jacob Orlove (Orlove) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 11:33 pm:

1600 here too, I think :)

By Rakso, Patriarch & Rules Ayatollah (Rakso) on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 11:36 pm:

I don't have a rating because there is no organized T1 tourney scene anywhere in this city, much less the country or region.

I also haven't joined any online league because the time difference makes it impossible for me to play comfortably. Last time I tried it, it was a sea of newbies sporting Keeper hate and I was forced to draw in ROUND 3 because of technical problems, and placed 9th after getting knocked out by some Sligh with MD hate I was mispaired against. I never tried it again.

K-Run, I'm not sure. He plays in a lot of tourneys but I don't know if they're sanctioned.

Azhrei has only recently been playing in sanctioned tourneys. He probably broke 1700 already.

Matt, I think is at the high 1700s or low 1800s.

Meridian should have a rating somewhere there, too, after playing in a number of tourneys.

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:29 am:

Matt D'Avanzo, up around 1840 or so.

I'm at 1696 right now, with 5 sanctioned tournaments under my belt, 4 of which have been against a bunch of other 1600 level people since our store just started having sanctioned tournaments. I expect to be up around 1800 sooner or later though, depending on how much I get a chance to play and whether or not I visit Neutral Ground to steal points.

By jpmeyer, keeper of ur mom (Jpmeyer) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 02:35 am:

Matt has 1841 and Carl has 1839

By Rakso, Patriarch & Rules Ayatollah (Rakso) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 03:57 am:

And I think JP was at like 1720 or 1740 at MTGOnline... :p

By Gnu, the Lightbringer (Gnu) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 05:53 am:

I only have 1693, but hopefully I'm playing 2 more sanctioned tournies within the next month.

Also, another dane, (Sonrik) on BD have 1768. But it looks like we're going to play sanctioned T1 once a month, the only problem is we have to drive 110 km -/

By Steve O'Connell (Zherbus) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 06:25 am:

I think like 90% of T1 players arent playing in sanctioned tournaments. I'd wager a good portion of players outside NG and Richmond Comix have much of a DCI history as far as Type 1 is concerned.

To boot, more and more people from this site are apprentice players only, or have to run suboptimal versions of a deck due to not owning power 9.

Tough to compare dicksize between horses and smurfs, I suppose.

By CF (Cf) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 08:19 am:

I have 1704 in t1, 1719 in constructed and 1920 in limited.

Too bad CTM tourneys are not sanctionned :-(

These events were Archmage tournaments held in Rimouski. I got that low when I made 3-12 at one of those tournaments, about 5 years ago, playing a Land Destruction/Counterspell deck. Now, I can't participate anymore since I work on sundays :-(

Other ratings :

By Matt D'Avanzo, the Sylvan Librarian (Matt) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 10:31 am:

1841 rating in type I currently, though it's a damn roller coaster ride. Maintaining a high rating at NG is hard as hell because the type I population is basically an elite 5% with high ratings and a lower 95% with dismal ratings that usually play nothing but total hate decks. Thus you gain DICK for beating most people and lose a ton of points any time you lose a game.

I have a 1730 rating in type II and have only played in 3 sanctioned events. Type II is the dumbest format EVER.

--Matt

By Arex (Arex) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 10:42 am:

I agree with you Matt, about T2, but if you don't play T2 around here, you won't be able to play anything....don't have a NG store here, and it seems the closest that I can get to play T1, is playing T1.5 :( I know, it is really sad. Adn even I do good on those, they don't use the DCI rating system, but one they created themselves in the store. I'm # 17 on the store, and I started playing there recently. I wish I could get more t1 going here....or maybe move to NY. ;)

By Stephen Michael Menendian (Smmenen) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 10:52 am:

To say Type Two is the dumbest format ever is total ignorance. Type Two is not a static format, and to say it is dumb is to make such a huge generalization as to be unsupportable.

By Arex (Arex) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 11:01 am:

Well, I recently starting to like T2 again. I hated it while MM and Invasion where legal. Now with Invasion block and Odyssey, I kinda like it again. But I like T1 way better....and I hate draft....kinda like sealed. :) But somethimes T2 gets kinda monotonus. This days, at least there are 4 dominant decks intead of 1 or 2 (like when fires was around). Now, at least you have Atog, Snake, Braids, and R/G beats...and Black is emerging, and some other decks like Sligh in T2. So ate least the env is more variant now....
my 2 mexican cents....

By Robb Williams (Robb) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 11:58 am:

Steven, Matt is just cranky 'cause he had his type 2 ass handed to him on a plate this weekedn at the Grudge match, he doesn't mean it. (By the way I got reamed this weekend too.)

My rating as of now is 1899 in type 1 so I guess that is pretty good. It was a bit over 1900 a week or two ago but the fates have not been kind.

By Kirika (Kirika) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 12:06 pm:

Type 2 is dumb because of the speed of the card rotation and the excessive amounts of money that must be spend to remain type 2 competitive. Over a 2 year period with 6 sets to buy. Type 2 is more expensive then getting a set of power 9 and playing Type 1. This is the big cash cow for Wizards which is good for them but it is just dumb because the sets rotate so fast that so much money must be sunk into it and it rotates so quickly that all the options for each set are left untried.

OK We are all upset cause we all didn't do so well at the Grudge Match. I do think that the set rotations are too quick.

My Rating is like 1740 or so probably higher cause I won the last 250 dollar type I :)

By Robb Williams (Robb) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 12:44 pm:

Vinny, that was a great description of type 2. It really is the most expensive format. Once you drop the money on type 1 you really don't need to spend any more ever. It is not popular with Wizards for that reason.
But that is for another thread...

By Steve O'Connell (Zherbus) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 12:54 pm:

Not to mention its all netdecks, no innovation, deck attachment, or fun broken things.

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:01 pm:

Forget NY come to Colorado Az:)j/k that would be quite the drive! Thanks for posting guys. There are some impressive ratings at NG (Matt, Robb. Very impressive)! The highest rated players in Colorado are around the high 1800's. It's nice here because some good players show up for the big type one events @ Mile High Comics so my rating doesn't drop too huge for losing, then again it doesn't increase much for winning either...I dislike type two but have not played it since '97! I just love the power of type one, plus you never know what you will face (where I play at leased, I mean there are a few ppl that play there signature decks, but a field of 64 tends to bring out some different decks!), the decks are very varied.
I used to live in Utah so i know all about having no Type one sanctioned events:( I feel for you FBI, Rakso, Arex, K-run and everyone else!

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 01:39 pm:

Robb, Smmenen is just upset because he had his Type One ass handed to him based entirely on his skill and not one bit on luck.

"To say Type Two is the dumbest format ever is total ignorance."

This is true, however. I think OBC will prove to be the dumbest format ever.

"Type Two is not a static format, and to say it is dumb is to make such a huge generalization as to be unsupportable."

Please read a book on logic, and then a book on rhetoric. Please.

By Redman, Relentless Leader of Scrubs (Redman) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 03:51 pm:

1594, baby! :)

My Type II and constructed ratings are actualy a good bit better, but most the matches for that are pre Urza's Block. (ie. When Type 2 still had good cards, when men were real men, etc. etc.)

Note on ratings...I tend to think that people with high ratings don't have much fun...I mean, if you're worried about dropping below 1800 or something, you aren't going to go to the next tourney with some brand new idea, you'll just show up with keeper week in-week out.

Sure, it makes it easier for people like me to metagame, but maybe next time you should put aside your trusty control deck, and satisfy your inner longing to play White Weenie.

It's not good to keep those feelings inside, you know.

Really :)

By Robb Williams (Robb) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 - 04:46 pm:

White weenie. Hmmmm. I have actually won a tourney or two with a white weenie deck but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. The deck list was hilarious but managed to win, don't know how.
I actually enjoy keeper but I get the point. I think that's why I started playing a little type 2, for variety and not always having the deck everyone sideboarded for.

By Freddie Williams II (Freddie) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 03:19 pm:

Green Knight: Were you just trying to get a feel of what the average pts are?

Or are you trying to discover who the best people are to listen to for advise?

If it is the latter, you should still be pretty scrutinizing of advise you get, as you see Rakso is not even ranked but spectacular on advise.

The metagame that Matt D' plays in is probly tougher then mine, which is probly why his pts are lower then mine, even though his skilllevel is superior to mine, and his advise is superb as well.

just wanted to add my 2 cent$

(as freddie shows his dumb ass to the world) :)

What does that mean?

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 05:18 pm:

I just wanted to see how people were rated around here, as BD Probably has the "best" type one players around. I was also wanting to see what type of ratings the different types of players had (arrgo, combo, control, arrgo/control) as suspected control has a handle on the best ratings posted above. I was also hoping to see what decks (arch types) people were playing along with the rating. From all of the names above I see a lot of Control (actually all names I recognize with good rating are control (except the lone combo (or different control deck besides keeper anyhow is parfait) player K-Run @1693). The only arrgo players I see have a 1600 rating, FBI, Sylvester, Spin13…) so it just seemed like a good thread to start. As far as advise I have been around, in the shadows some times, long enough to judge which players opinions I agree with. Thanks for looking out for me though Freddie.

By Matt the Great (Matt) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 08:40 pm:

Personally, I try to take the advice of whomever can use correct spelling and grammar, rather than rankings.

Incidentally, what's with people typing 'arrgo'? At first I thought this was just a typo, but I've seen it more and more and I'm starting to suspect something.

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 09:14 pm:

I guess people (whistles) are just putting the Grr in aRRGo (oGRRa), it looks cooler anyway...: )

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 09:30 pm:

Umm...Either K-run gained over 100 pts in less than a month or I had a typo somewhere...
Now don't get me wrong w/ all this rating jazz, I am not saying if you have a 1700+ rating you are God's gift to Type One, or that the arrgo players on the board are bad 'cause they aren't rated yet. I was just wondering where everyone was, rating wise.

By The Singularity Eliminator (Sylvester) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 10:12 pm:

Well, there probably is a correlation between having power and having the dedication to go to tourneys. And, inversely, there should be one between large (and often rated) tourneys available and getting the P9.

Now, ocne you actually HAVe the P9, are gonna play keeper or aggro/other deck most of the time?

By Green Knight (Greenknight) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 10:18 pm:

Is say own the P9 and play a deck of your choice. Try something new: ) Sure Keeper seems to be the end all be all, and it IS a great deck. But there are lots of other great decks too. I see what you are saying about owning the power 9 and playing control vs. arrgo though.

By Azhrei (Azhrei) on Monday, April 08, 2002 - 11:00 pm:

I hereby decree that henceforth it be known as "arrgo," for the simple reason that when you play it, if you haven't won by turn five you say "Argh... go."

By Matt D'Avanzo, the Sylvan Librarian (Matt) on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 02:44 am:

Ratings are generally garbage in my opinion, but people like Matt have shown time and time again they have skill. Sure I disagree with somethings he says, but (see the old Nantuko Shade thread) we present our points, make our opinions known, and actually discuss shit.

Shouting that you can beat anyone, or generally insult a proven decent player is no way to disagree with someone. Try bringing up some semi valid points and one day someone might take you seriously.

In Dülmen Germany's largest Type-1-tourneys are held every month. It's the place where everyone and his brother plays Tubbies.:))

Cool, I'm looking forward to meet you. I hope someone will lend me the P9, so I can play Keeper in the tourney. (CE doesn't get you far in the DCI...)

Sure I do remember our challenge, even though I never planned on playing Mono-U. I said Draw Go and my Draw Go definitely isn´t Mono-U :D

Just wanted to add that I played 35 Tourneys and therefore over 200 sanctioned matches. I would be interested to know if theres someone who can top that.

Emerald, Ruby and Pearl are already waiting for you Dozer, I hope I can get the rest in time for June.

My rating is low, but the best spanish type 1 player's one is 1851 0_o I can't belive there are some guys better than A COUNTRY here! wow. And now that Type 1 was the most popular format in Spain up to Tempest... wow

Okay, Draw-Go, I succumb. We'll play it out nonetheless. Btw, THANKS for your efforts! It's so nice of you and the people who assist you.

Well, it seems like I will have to give my highly teched Suicide to a companion of mine who's coming too... And it will rock house! :)
