Soldevi Guild

Beyond Dominia: 3rd War Mill Planning Board: Soldevi Guild

-->
By ETP on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 12:31 am:

The Soldevi Guild is officially open for business, and we dont even have a world yet. The Soldevi Guild is a collection of Artificers and Steampunk Knights that are trying, through the use of magic and technology, gain control over the Capital city and surrounding area. An entire factory district called the 'Clockwork City' exists, filling the air above the capitol with smoke and ever-present fog. Guildmembers can be of any race, or profession, but must have an affinity for technology, as it exists in the world. All the soldevi inventions are either steam powered, or clockwork combined with magic. Some exeptions occur, such as trapping a skizzit and using him to fuel a machine, or windmill powered devices etc.

The Soldevi Guild is operated by a council of Artificers and Steam Knights. The unnoficial ruler of the Guild is Escaelus Falconer. Escaelus is a former Steam Knight, who became a general for the Capitol's army and has since taken to magic and the creation of new devices. His former status as a powerful warrior General has afforded the guild many options that they wouldnt have otherwise had.
Escaelus stands 6'2" tall and is powerfully built. He is appoaching 50 years old, but appears in his early 30's. Other notable features include the lightblue and smoke grey armor he wears (sky blue and smoke grey being the soldevi colors), the armor is an artistic patchwork of layered metal, and small gears can be seen working through each part in the armor. Escaelus' most shocking feature however is his left arm, which is an oversized iron contraption powered by a mix of steam-power and sorcery.
Escaelus is a serius man, and a good leader, but finds himself missing the glory of the battlefield and secretly dislikes his job on the council. However he believes that the Guild of Soldevi should be the guild that determines the future of the Capitol, and so he works towards that goal.

Members of the Guild live within the clockwork city, and are surrounded by their fellow guildsman. Any member can call upon 3-4 lesser steam knights in case of emergency, and can find deals on an assortment of magical devices.

Feel free to add input on this guild, suggest your own ideas for the guild and its history, all ideas will be considered. Aswell, if you would like to make a character (even one of the council members of the guild) post them below. First come first serve to be a Soldevi Council member.

By ETP on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 12:44 am:

Just to note, the council is made up of only 5 people. Which means there are only 4 slots left.

By Nix (Nix) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 02:04 am:

maybe this could be like the "capital city" i saw a few posts down. anyway, as for history:

Escaelus was subject to the downfall of the once beautiful city that lies under the glorious city of Soldevi. War torn as a child after seeing his father slain cold-bloodedly by the Savopolans, also a once great race. Few Savopolans survived their own invasion, and Escaelus is the lone known survivor of the race. A half breed of Savopolan and Soldevi, he had the characteristics of his father; the great leader, the exceptionally well planner, the smart one. His mother was Soldevi, and she survived solely for the fact that she was Soldevi. When the Savopolans invaded Soldevi 30 years ago, they had done so in a peaceful form. Escaelus's father, a Savopolan named Theopocris, met and fell in love with a Soldevi, Cranzacrotis. When the Savapolan leader was assinated, the Savopolans declared war on the Soldevi's. The father, who previously had an open relationship with Cranzacrotis, was executed by the Soldevi for inter-racial courtship. The mother was spared, and the baby Escaelus is what came of her. She died shortly thereafter being struck by many un-natural falling objects. Escaelus feels bitter towards the people he leads, but yet strives to be accepted as the fearless leader among his people.

**To be continued**

feel free to continue this, i will also add later.

By ETP on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 12:31 pm:

Nix, the history has some interesting elements. Some of the sames will probably end up being changed, but i could see myself using alot of that. Being the sole survivor of a race that was killed by the people escaelus now protects is a good bit of history.

Just remember, that I plan for Escaelus to be my character in the new mill, so any ideas about his history are going to be given close scrutiny.

Feel free to invent a council member character of your own for use with the guild.

By Nix (Nix) on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 10:24 pm:

Escaelus is looking for something that will make a name for his self, and the neighboring race, the ~insert race name here~, have been terrorizing the race to the south, the ~insert race here~. This is affecting the way the Soldevi do business, and war seems to be the only rational alternative. The people of Soldevi are basically divided into 2 generations. The elderly were too old to be drafted in the war, and the entire generation of children were drafted in the war. only babies survived and elderlies survived, and the grandparents were left to take care of the young ones. Because of the war, the young ones of Soldevi were raised to be peaceful. Of course, you cant forget, there were a few Soldevi survivors of the war. They were deemed unfit for a peaceful society by the same 5 council members that hold their position today, and all 300 or so survivors died a painless, honorable death by the hands of the city they put their lives up for. This is another thing that Escaelus is feeling betrayed by. He was the lone opposer of the decision, but majority rules in the Soldevi society so the survivors were put to death. Part of Escaelus wants to massacre his society, part of him wants to defend it for everything it's worth. These things are what shapes his personality, his passion for loyalty, and his revengeful thoughts. Will Escaelus lead his city in to a war that may lead to the downfall of the great society, or will he become the "Draconian" leader that all of the Soldevi dread? The only thing that will decide this is this little thing called time.

I'm new to this whole story telling-role playing thing, but for my character, i'd like to be the imperialistic one of the Council members that is itching for war. Leave me in charge of our soon to be built army, navy, etc. and i could take us places. Or at least my vision would be that. I dunno yet, but i definitely like the imperialist idea. Count me in as a council member. THanks

By Tank on Saturday, June 30, 2001 - 11:47 pm:

Another council memeber is Wulfson Binro mostly known amongst friends and enemies as "Tank" for his most powerful invention. Stainless steel sides. Treads made of a substance which it's creation is a great mystery. A vent in the back spits out scalding hot steam to vent the behemoth machine. The front has 3 long barrels which spew a substance of the driver's choice into the enemy. A personal favorite of Wulfson is small balls of strange gel that sucks the heat right from anything it touches. Freezing machines, soldiers, water right on contact. On the top is the pride of Tank. A high-calibur cannon, it shots a single ball of explosives right into the heart of the enemy. It blows up with such force that a man once described it as, "It seemed like the end of the world fighting that tank. The explosions made the ground rumble like huge beasts were stampededing. And the heat was like the very depths of the Underworld."

Tank himself is quite a fellow himself. A man standing 6ft3 and looking as if he came jumping from a story book about Vikings and Norse Myths. His fiery red beard and hair grew long and thick. His dress wasn't furs and helmets though. He goes with a strange outfit. He wears a queer looking helmet which covers his eyes and is made of an incredibly light metal. His body is usually covered in strange exploding balls of his own making with dark-grey tunic and dark grey pants. Upon his pants are his only weapons of simple design. A heavy mace with large spikes. Upon his highly exposed arms are scars and burns of all sorts. From marks made from knives, to marks made from his own weaponry.

From his looks and weapons you may think him a barbarian, but he has the lightest hands with machines then any old human. He can repair a machine in record time with the right tools. He isn't a terribly great orator but he gets points across. He feels more at home amongst machines than people. That is the man called Wulfson "Tank" Binro

P.S-Hope I'm on the council with all the time I took to write :)

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 12:06 am:

Alright, here is the Current History of Escaelus.

Escaelus is one of the last true Soldevi people, a race of people with an affinity for artifice. Their empire was a strong one, built upon using machines of war to conquer. However their society made many enemies through its warring, and warred even with itself. This led eventually to its downfall. The soldevi empire has long since fallen (hundreds of years ago). Its greatest city is now the ruins upon which the Capitol City has been built. The soldevi as a race is nearly extinct, save for a few, and very few are of pure blood. Escaelus is one of those few pure blooded Soldevi.
The Guild is called Soldevi now because of the affinity for creation and invention which the old race shared. Beyond that, it bears little ties with the race of people. Escaelus has spent many years becoming a powerful and influental person and now finds himself as the unnoficial head of the Soldevi Guild. He fought as the General of the Capitols army, but has since left that position to spend more time building and learning the magical arts. He finds himself torn between his loyalty to the guild, and his feelings of hatred towards the people around him, since they are the offspring, and grandchildren of those who destroyed his people.

Escaelus' magic allows him an immunity from damage by machines, and many tools forged by men. Magic damage, crude weaponry, and natural (claws, fists) weapons affect him normally. He lost his arm fighting against a young dragon while serving as a general for the capitols army. It is replaced with a massive iron contraption, that resembles an arm. He uses the arm normally and finds no difficulty using it despite its obvious weight, and it gives him an incredible strength when on the attack.

His physical description is 6'2, 200 pounds, and well built (his weight is calculated whithout the iron arm). His hair is cut short, in military fashion and is a smoke grey. His eyes are sky blue, and his skin is a pale white.

That is the current history of the character, and of the race he belongs to.

Nix: You are in as a council member. Now all we need to find is a city-state to war with.. perhaps Tar Valon, from super autumn gaeanewts post.

Tank: You are in as a council member.

By Tank on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 12:45 am:

Some ideas for the guild. IF we go with the whole Spyre, towers, guilds get towers, and all that jazz. Here's my idea. Ok the central Tower in the city of Spyre has the current ruling faction in it. For now let's say were not it. Now since we are one of the guilds. We get a large tower next to the Ruling Guild's tower. Now around the SIG(Soldevi Inventor's Guild. Off the top of my head) tower are smaller towers each ruled by one of the council members while Escaleus(If you spell it like that.) Resides in the main tower. I think the council should split up into this.

Leader/Governement-Escaleus
Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces-Nix
Head of Armory Engineers and Mobile Armor-Wulfson(Tank)
Director of Civil Engineers-Free
Chairmen of the Diplomacy and Econmics board-Free

Escy's job is everything a leader's job is. It's a little bit of everything.
Nix is the cheif general. He trains troops, sends them to die and all that jazz.
I'ld be the man who heads the division that invents and makes Weapons,Armor, Trucks, etc. Also I'ld run an armored divison of tanks.
Director of C.E would run factories that make peace-time products and make sure people houses, the clocks, and all civil machines worked.
The last guy would be the diplomat and trader of the bunch. My Ideas. Out

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 01:01 am:

I like that idea tank, i like it alot. So we will make that official as of right now.
Remember one thing while you are designed your weapons, they have to be appropriately fantasy oriented. Clockwork, and steam power are the primary mechanics, with magic backing them up. So try and make sure the tanks keep that feeling about them. They shouldnt run in a similar fashion to electric or gas powered vehicles, and that distinction should be made apparent. But i currently like your ideas quite a bit.

By Tank on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 01:09 am:

Sure I got ideas already.

The basic tank description is in my first post. If you want it to be lower-tech just tell me.

Just tell me what you want for your grunts so I don't get to close to M-16's and that.

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 01:27 am:

Well, for starters, it shouldnt be called a tank.. it should be called something like 'Soldevi Battlewagon' and you shouldnt mention calibur of a cannon, since that seems like a modern word. Dont forget that this is a fantasy type world with dragons and elves, and not science fiction. However the various tools of the Soldevi Battlewagon are fine, since they can be chalked up to the magic within.

Many 'grunts' will still use normal swords and clubs etc, because most guild members are mearly quality creators, like carpenters, and weaponsmiths etc. Many warriors will be outfitted with standard fantasy weapons, that are magical in nature, because another aspect of the guild is making artifacts of a classical nature.
However, the third type of guildmember, the type you fall into, has auto loading crossbows with exploding arrows, Soldevi Battlewagons, Suits of Clockwork armor that increase speed and strenght but must be recharged by turning a large key on the back. And even prostetics like the one Escaelus has, made of both magic and steam/clockwork. People of this type called SteamKnights, could have metal plated chests, and attack with a sword with a serrated edge that moves rapidly to cut even faster etc. Just make sure that a mix of old style fantasy and steampunk is maintaned.

By Nix (Nix) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 02:21 pm:

ok, this is my character:

Athoss Golias

Athoss is a stocky man, 5'11" and 210 lbs. He has dark slicked back hair, and 2 scars on his right arm from an accident as a child that required him to have metal plates, screws, gears, and a steam-powered joint at the growth plate. He has gold, grey eyes that make him look older than he really is. Though he is 64 years old, he is still in great health. Usually his clothes include smoke grey slacks, a white button down shirt, blue tie and blue suspenders. His glare is what scares people, not to mention that his size certainly adds to the effect.

As far as personality goes, he is an arrogant, cocky, opinionated realist that isnt afraid to tell it like it is. Though he is hot tempered, he does have a wife that he loves and respects. He prefers brute force over smarts, and would much rather blow someones vehicle up than pick him off from the building next door. A self proclaimed nationalist, he is itching to prove to the neighboring city of Tar Valon that they are worthy of the land they own, whether it be by war with them or by war with a common enemy.

Nice, i like it. I like how the last sentence leaves the options open for stories with tar valon, either as an enemy or an ally.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 05:54 pm:

ok, spyre(or whatever it will be called) is a dwarven mountain kingdom, where my main character will be at, they are friendly with the city and often journey to it to sell their many well made weapons and armor, etc. as for Tar Valon, they are also friendly with them, but if a war was to break out between the two cities, the dwarves would fight them both, because the trade they maintain between each city is so valuable. most of the time theyre worried about drow attacks on their more underground areas, and deep inside some dwarves is a growing hatred towards all elves, mainly from the drow, and some wrongful suspicions. my character, darzim lereno, is a warrior in a task force of sorts thats sent to the more major drow attacks. hes short, even for a dwarf, but is very muscular. he uses a hand and a half(bastard) sword normally when fighting, but also has built a custom warhammer(dwarves are known for it, arent they). to tell what it looks like, take a normal hammer from now, make it longer, in the back, but a small axe, and on top put a blade thats a little longer then aq typical dagger's. hes one of the more radical dwarves in the area of elven hatred(surprised, eh?) and has a secret agenda against them, though you couldnt tell by knowing him. the name of the dwarven kingdom is Khalud-Khuzir, and the its ruled by a king by the name of Thalag Milud. And the dwarven weapons and armor is the best in the area, and only other dwarves blacksmithing compares. its possible that a war between Khalud-Khuzir and another dwarven kingdom could happen because of their pride in their work.

what do you think?

and ill have the dwarven description by tomorrow.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 05:56 pm:

ok, i forgot a few things, Darzim is 3' 9" and 156 lbs. and 34 years old(very young for a dwarf, as they live to be 150-200 years old) the king is probably the best at dwarven magic in the area, and was born witht he talent. hes about 4' "2 and 131 lbs, wile being 167 years old and near his death. there, thats about it.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 06:02 pm:

ok here we go again, the dwarves at Khalud-Khuzir discovered a new metal, that they named Athalan. Its just as strong if not stronger then their best steel, at half the weight(bascially titianium now). but its very hard to work with. its named for the dwarven word for dragon, as it has the strength and the quickness of a dragon.

By Autumn Gaeanewts messenger {Super Autumn Gaeanewt} on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 06:05 pm:

The keeper of the truth, Autumn Gaeanewt asks for a peace treaty with the people in the guild of the Soldevi. This would call for an Aelfin advisor to your guild, a Soldevi advisor in the high council of tar valon, and lower prices on The water of the springs of tel'aron'rhiod, in exchange for Soldevi defensive weapons for Tar Valon's walls, and protection against bandits on the trade routes, of which there has been considerable trouble. Although Tar Valon is near impenetrable, it can never hurt to be cautious, for there is always a way to get in. This was not said out of suspicion of your race, it is refering to the power of your defensive artifice to defend the city.
Signed,
Autumn Gaeanewt

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 06:06 pm:

ok, spyre(or whatever it will be called) is a dwarven mountain kingdom

i wrote that, and i meant:

ok, spyre(or whatever it will be called) is near a dwarven mountain kingdom

finally, i hope

By Tank on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 06:39 pm:

Well, Darzim has to choose one of the posiitons in to council.
Director of Civil Engineers
Chairmen of the Diplomacy and Econmics Board
Those are the spots left.

By Super Autumn Gaeanewt on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 06:40 pm:

If you accept the peace treaty, you also have to send an advisor to us.

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:06 pm:

Tank, burns character, darzim, is not a council member, so he doesnt have to choose one of the titles.

Burn, is your dwarven character a member of the soldevi guild, or is your post just to further develope the world around the Spyre. I really like the dwarven city you have planned. I think the proximity of nations like yours will make the spyre area very interesting.

Autumn Gaeanewt, the Spyre is certainly interested in your proposal and an alliance as you have suggested is a great idea. I will make a second character for the purposes of being the Soldevi advisor in Tar Valon.
The character is Owen Barramon, a thin man in his mid twenties. He is an inventor and an architect who has spent his entire life with machinery. Coming to the land of Tar Valon will be quite a shock to him, as the land sounds very magical, and he is unprepared for Aelfin life.
It would be really appreciated if you could give me some details about Tar Valon, and some physical descriptions of some of the places that Owen will see so i can begin writing about his travels to your land.

By Super Autumn Gaeanewt on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:21 pm:

Those descriptions will be in the More about Tar Valon post. Also, he will be strong in the gift, not as strong as Autumn Gaeanewt, but close, so make some random chances happen, so It can all be put together when he reaches Tar Valon. That way, he can be schooled at the yemedaca when he gets there.

By ETP on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:26 pm:

you want my soldevi character Owen, to have the gift? That can be arranged. He will not at first know he has the gift however, since he doesnt consider himself a magical sort of person. I suppose someone in tar valon would realize he has the gift through observing him.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:31 pm:

he has nothing to do with soldevi or spyre as of right now, and it was to basically expand the known world, but i have some plans that have to do with athalon. and the king has some background dealings with the soldevi, so he "knows how to talk to them" i guess you could say.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:45 pm:

"Escaelus is looking for something that will make a name for his self, and the neighboring race, the ~insert race name here~, have been terrorizing the race to the south, the ~insert race here~. This is affecting the way the Soldevi do business, and war seems to be the only rational alternative"

ok, i see my dwarves as the race to the south, and the drow the race harrassing us, but they would be underground, and probably live in the soldevi's old city, so the soldevi and the dwarves together could try to take the underground city after a while, but the drow as of right now arent really doing anything major, actually, the dwarves at Khalud-Khuzir are at a peaceful state, but you know how dwarves love war, and Thalag Milud(the king) can tell that if the dwarves dont a war soon, they may just do an outright attack on the drow. But the main thing on the dwarves mind right now is trying to figure out a way to work the new metal, athalon(can you see where im going soldevi guild members? btw, since its named for the dwarven word for dragon, the word for dragon is aphalon.)

By Super Autumn Gaeanewt on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 07:52 pm:

Wulfson(Tank)-Head of Armory Engineers and Mobile Armor.
Owen Barroman-Advisor to Tel Varon.

this is what we have open:
Director of Civil Engineers
Chairmen of the Diplomacy and Econmics board

Memo to Escy:

Escy-
Being that we are at peace with Tel Varon, i am in favor of sending out troops to at least help their defense efforts. I would like your vote, along with the other 3 council members. Owen should have some input on this as well, being that he is the advisor to Tel Varon. I would also like a meeting with Autumn Gaeanewt after words to discuss future plans. Please get back to me soon.
