A word about orignal names

Beyond Dominia: 3rd War Mill Planning Board: A word about orignal names

Goss pointed out to me that "Tar Valon" comes from Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and that the name probably shouldn't be used as a city name for RP purposes. Since this isn't Wheel of Time fan fiction, it could cause confusion, etc. That's just an example, and I apologize to the person who made that if he/she feels like I'm singling him/her out.

I understand the attraction to naming things with names from popular fiction, but unless they're really obscure (like Oor-Tael) or used in a different context (i.e. a person named Tar Valon, rather than a city), they probably shouldn't be used. Also, in my mind, it feels better to use original names. Not a big point, but something to consider.

my names are either of my creations, or from a name generator i have, which i usually modify the name to fit better i i use it. But dont be surprised if alot of my names sound tolkienish, or even greyhawkish, cause thats the 2 main things i gen my names from.

By Super Autumn Gaeanewt on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 01:43 pm:

Sorry. I couldn't resist, considering Tar Valon is the coolest name for a city I've ever heard. I won't do it again, but please don't make me change it.

I have used a magic the gathering name 'Soldevi', i thought it was fine, due to the fact that the site also host magic the gathering discussion.
Should i change the name.. believe me it would not be a problem to do so.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 02:02 pm:

hmmm....im pretty sure it would be a good idea to change the name.

i have a few suggestions, for Tar Valon:
Tarion
Valone Taron
Varon Tal
Tal Varon

and for Soldevi:
Seldovi
Silvedi
Velsovi

i just played around witht he current names if you couldnt tell...

By The Maxx,. the Guru of Foolishness (Maxx) on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 03:52 pm:

Soldevi should be fine though, as it is a builders guild, and the Soldevi in Magic were artificers. Plus, there are going to be some tie ins to magic, just not blaring parallels. The use of mana, for example, should be a part of the magical system here.

i love mtg's concept of mana, were definately using that.

i could care less if either of the names are the same, as i dont play mtg, or ever read wheel of time, but thats me...

By Nix (Nix) on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 05:06 pm:

i like soldevi a lot, and i dont see the harm in having a few same names of cities, as long as they're not carbon copies of the cities in mtg or any other game, book, etc. I mean, if the names are cool, why not?

By ETP on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 10:17 pm:

k, the name soldevi stays then, since people say its fine. Im happy about that, since i love the name.

By Goss Nuzzo-Jones (Goss) on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 10:35 pm:

I seriously dislike the very obvious use of another authors work in this sense. It would make sense if this was a Wheel of Time storyline, but here, it just feels...cheap. However, neither Shadow nor I are here to MAKE you do anything.

Later,
Goss

How about Talon Vale... its close.. and it is still pretty cool sounding. What do you think Gaeanewt.

Personally, having never read Wheel of time, i dont mind the name.. but i suppose some people could find it distracting.

By ETP on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 10:52 pm:

oh, forgot something.

Hello, Goss. Welcome to the 3rd War Mill, i hope to be hearing some positive and constructive posts from you soon. There are a bunch of guilds already, and plenty of opportunity to create your own. I cant wait to hear about your character.

By Super Autumn Gaeanewt on Tuesday, July 03, 2001 - 10:57 pm:

I guess I can change it to Tel Varon if I have to.

Why not borrow words from non-English languages?

I can contribute a few from Filipino (which has elements of Spanish and Malay) or from a few Chinese dialects, if you guys are so inclined.

The poetry of made-up languages was one of Tolkien's greatest points.

By Burn, the Keeper of the Flame (Fereno) on Wednesday, July 04, 2001 - 12:59 pm:

are you seriously gonna give us your raksonians? I really think this race will be unique...

im making up a few words for the dwarven language, theres only like 5 so far....but as i go, more will come...

By Shadow (Shadow) on Wednesday, July 04, 2001 - 11:19 pm:

To clarify, since this is somewhat more mtg-centric, I don't think mtg names are a problem, so long as it isn't straight out of storylines (i.e. Rath). I imagine "mana" would come into play, and possibly "planes." The difference is that, while this isn't LotR fan fiction or WoT fan fiction, it is in a sense mtg-related fiction (that gives it some purpose on an mtg website, at least).
