Which Fattie do you think is the best? A lot of people will come up with Verdant Force, but I don't think it's the complete package. Send in your opinions.

By Lava on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 09:43 am:

Rohx

its the most unstoperble green creature, and can be castable/called easy enought.

By PJ E on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 10:48 am:

thorn elemental, better than rhox with out reg.

By BrianB, the Patron of Elves and Silly Combos (Brianb) on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 11:21 am:

I gotta go with verdant force for best green fatty (that you don't intend to actually cast). Those tokens are a major pain in the rear for lots of decks. He doesn't work as fast as thorny, but those tokens make good blockers and they eventually become overwhelming.

For best fatty that you actually cast, i'd go with blastoderm, though there are lots of solid 4cc choices. Deranged hermit is quite good, too (if you count his little buddies, that's 9 points of beatings).

By Zeus on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 01:15 pm:

Thorn Elemental.

By Drizzt on Tuesday, November 06, 2001 - 02:47 pm:

Are you talking in all of Magic or just 1.x? Overall, good old Ernie is the best green fatty ever. However, in 1.x I would have to still go with Verdent. Other fatties can be solid but are a little more situational that the big Saproling producer himself.

By gary from london on Wednesday, November 07, 2001 - 09:05 am:

special mention for the prophecy green avatar of might. yes, i know you all hate him but hes got so much trample the player on the next table also takes some damage !

By don on Wednesday, November 07, 2001 - 04:28 pm:

oho.

we've got:

-Verdant Force
-Rhox
-Thorn Elemental
-Deranged Hermit
-Blastoderm
-Erhnam Djinn

Gaeas Child?

By Magyk20 on Wednesday, November 07, 2001 - 10:59 pm:

Birds of Pardise

By don on Thursday, November 08, 2001 - 06:02 am:

well, Birds are really good, but I don't think they qualify as a fatty.

My favourite right now is Penumbra Wurm, which only falters to one removal spell - Swords to Plowshares. But the Wurm is unstoppable against any other kind of removal like Terminate, Burn, Perish, Terror and the like... and it's also surprisingly hard to kill the wurm with creatures. I've got one copy maindeck in my Secret Force.

By Hyper Emotion Monster (Sylvester) on Thursday, November 08, 2001 - 11:44 am:

rogue elephanr ;-)

By don on Thursday, November 08, 2001 - 02:18 pm:

Multani also rules (especially in multiplayer)

By Joe on Thursday, November 08, 2001 - 03:32 pm:

Does Weatherseed Treefolk qualify as a "fatty"? I have always kind of liked him due to his recursive nature. He isnt as fat as Verdant Force or Thorn Elemental, but he is cheaper, pretty hard to kill, and has Trample. As far as "Best Fatty Ever Printed", I would probably still have to hand it to the Verdant Force (because Jamie Wakefield told me its so).

By Andrew, the Sphinx Slayer (Andrew) on Thursday, November 08, 2001 - 08:00 pm:

Verdent force is without contest the best fattie ever printed. Child of gaea is second best in green, then weathersead treefolk. Thorn elemental is a distant 6th (after 'derm and hermit).

By Sokra on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 06:56 am:

Well, first of all, I don't think Erhnam is best, because Blasto is better in the 4cc slot. I'd say that best green fatty is either THE "Best fatty ever printed" or Deranged Hermit. Still, the best green creature must be Quirion Ranger =)

By don on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 03:30 pm:

If there was a top-ten list, it would probably look like this:

1. Verdant Force (I played Secret Force, but this guy got Terminated, Sworded, Terrored, bounced and burned I sometimes had the feeling it isn't the best, I didn't even get a token because it left play on my turn)
2. Penumbra Wurm (I know it's a bit too high, but he's very, very hard to kill for every color not running Swords)
3. Multani, Maro Sorcerer (untargetability is very important in my eyes)
4. Blastoderm (he costs four and is a five-power untargetable --> most playable fattie)
5. Deranged Hermit (very versatile, tokens stay in play even if he leaves play, various combinations maximize the power of this card, 9 point beatings per turn)
6. Rhox
7. Thorn Elemental
8. Gaeas Child
9. Hunted Wumpus (big in T1 creatureless metagames)
10. Erhnam Djinn (because of its coolness)

What do you think?

By LordLamneth on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 04:31 pm:

How come no one mentioned Kavu Titan? He's a 5/5 Trampler for 3GG! Usually 5/5's for 5 come with a penalty (or multiple penalties), but he comes with no penalties, and not one but two abilites: trample, and the option to be a grizzly bear. He's top 5, easily.

Assuming a Type I environment, and a mono-green deck, here's how I'd rank:

1) Blastoderm
2) Erhnam Djinn :) Still the man!
3) Kavu Titan
4) Child of Gaea
5) Rhox
6) Thorn Elemental
7) Verdant Force
8) Multani, Maro-Sorcerer
9) Deranged Hermit
10) Hunted Wumpus

Honorable mention for fun: Yavimaya Ants

LordLamneth

By Sokra on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 05:33 pm:

ACH! Damn, how could I forget Yavimaya Ants, one of my favorite casual green creatures! 100% coolness on that one.

By Phrike on Friday, November 09, 2001 - 07:13 pm:

Llanowar Elite!!!

erm...

Okay, before I get hung:

1) Blastoderm
2) Rhox
3) Deranged Hermit
4) Argothian Wurm (very cool in a LD deck)
5) Child of Gaea
6) Thresher Beast (fun in a casual LD deck)

By Chicken No. 1, the Defender of the Fowls (Chickenno1) on Saturday, November 10, 2001 - 02:46 am:

In no particular order:
1. Blastoderm. (4-cost common 5/5 untargetable? YEAH!)
2. Multani Maro Socerer (Dominates multiplayer!)
3. Kavu Titan, for it's selective CC.
4. Verdant Force (generates 1 token every turn, including opponents'!)
5. Argorthian Wurm, once part of Legion's Land Loss....

Honorable mention: Titania's Chosen, assuming you can pump him to nigh infinity...

By dive on Monday, November 12, 2001 - 12:16 pm:

1: erhnam djinn
2: blastoderm
3: kavu titan
4: stampeding wildbeast
5: argothian wurm

Essential for a fattie (unless you play reanimator) is that it's 4 mana. Speed is everything. Kavu titan is an exception cause it can be played for 2 mana. For 5 mana, there's only one real great creature, and it ain't green (morphling). The best 5caster for green is deranged hermit.
If mana cost doesn't matter (reanimator or other tricks), then i go for verdant force

By hellion, THE on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 04:11 am:

erm.. what was that 6/6 for 5 mana without drawback 2 abilities creature wishmonger or something? or the underrated 7/7 for 5 mana trampler/gating?

humm.. I don't think she would like to be called a fatty, but reya dawnbringer is so far the best.

By Chicken No. 1, the Defender of the Fowls (Chickenno1) on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 04:57 am:

7/7 for 5 mana w/tampler w/gating is the Shivan Wurm which is not completely green so it doesn't count. Only pure green critters are counted.

Haveta check the Inquest for the 6/6 one tho.....

By LordLamneth on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 10:41 am:

I'm assuming that you mean:

Spiritmonger

Mana Cost: 3BG
Type & Class: Creature - Beast
Power/Toughness: 6/6
Card Text: Whenever Spiritmonger deals damage to a creature, put a +1/+1 counter on Spiritmonger.
B: Regenerate Spiritmonger.
G: Spiritmonger becomes the color of your choice until end of turn.

Also not straight green.

LordLamneth

By Ocifer on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 05:18 pm:

I vote for Deranged Hermit.
In an elf deck with Natural Order the Hermit just plain rules. There's no way to win faster than to drop a fat Hermit on turn 3 or 4, and throw down a Coat of Arms next turn for a squirrel beating.
Ah, 'tis a beautiful thing.

By fatchick on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 - 05:34 pm:

yeah i am all about verdant, multani and force of nature, for its time it was beast...

By black decker on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 - 09:52 pm:

okay, here are my picks as a good ole green player:

1. Spiritmonger (Next most broken thing to Superman!)
2. Blastoderm (What more could you ask for than a 10 cents juzaam!!??)
3. Deranged Hermit (The squirrels!!)
4. Multani (Duh!)
5. Thorn Elemental (7/7 unblockable equivalents r kool!)

By "Psycho" Cid (Cid) on Thursday, November 15, 2001 - 01:09 am:

The top 3 are definetly Verdant, Blasto, and Hermit. I love Ernie, but he's second to Blasto and only better when you need the fattie to be splashable. Argothian Wurm is crap (believe me, I have tried it in so many LD decks) - it's just not worth playing over a RELIABLE fatty. Wumpus is the same, but works in certain decks/environments. Stampeeding Wildebeests is definetly a good pic, in the right deck. :D Kavu Titan is excellent for what it does, too. Everything else mentioned is pretty bad, relatively speaking. But the one guy everybody forgot...greens best creature ever...FLORAL SPUZZEM! "A world without Floral Spuzzem is not a world worth living in."

Peace.

By omegaflare on Saturday, November 17, 2001 - 05:28 pm:

why has nobody else mentioned anything on Spiritmonger? It is green as one color, gets +1+1 whenever it deals damage, regenerates, and changes color. Heck!! It slices, it dices, it chops, it cuts... and get this... it even cleans up easily. Sledge-o-matic!!! The creature

By Craig on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 10:52 am:

I'm a bit of a fan of that there Terravore... X/X trample for 1GG is some good in a 'Geddon deck (X=no. of land cards in all graveyards) :). No wonder they rotated 'Geddon out.

Beyond that, the problem with a lot of these "fatties" is that they don't have evasion (trample or super-trample). 'Derm is good, and all, but he only lasts 3 turns and he'd drop markedly in quality in today's type 2 (Lynx).

Lynx and MoR are serious problems for the Green Fat without trample, which narrows the list to tramplers (including Thorny and Rhox) and token generators. Looking at size vs cost, you've got Force of Nature, Child of Gaea, Stampeding Wildebeest, Thorny, Rhox, Hermit, Verdant Force... Actually, with Green Fat, it's a pretty short list :). If you're playing LLL or X-Geddon, I'd throw in Terravore as well, but other than that... Well, there's always Craw Giant!

By The Star Boss on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 01:39 am:

Hello all! This is what I think the top 5 list looks like:

1. Verdant force!!! (What other creature would you rather have hit the board than turn 4?!)
2. Deranged Hermit (SO hard to deal with w/o Wrath)
3. Blastoderm (Very reliable, easily can hit on turn 3, hard to kill)
4. Ernham Djinn (The old classic! I sure wish it was a 4/3 versus a 3/4...)
5. Child of Gaea (6 mana 7/7 Trample w/ regenerate? That's good*)

By intrepid911 on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 08:05 pm:

deranged hermit is hideously easy to deal with. A good way to tell a fatty from a good creature is if it dies to Strafe. strafe sucks. Hermit dies to strafe. He leaves behind a bunch of squirrel tokens, but so what? you just go donated an illusions, you're already dead.

By Dissension on Saturday, November 24, 2001 - 09:54 pm:

Autumn Willow

:)

By The Star Boss on Sunday, November 25, 2001 - 02:57 am:

Hermit is good! 8 damage next turn is a hefty thing to deal with* double up with something like Plow Under, Tradewind Rider, Opposition, Coat of Arms, or a number of others and it's game! Counterspell is fun too, because they can't hit the thing with a BLAZING SALVO if you COUNTER it! Besides, have you ever been at 20 life by the time someone dropped a hermit after turn 4? (Unless it's Hermit Opposition, you'll prolly get folded by the smaller creatures or a turn 3/4 Hermit*)

Face it: Hermit is one of the best green creatures ever printed. When supported by a wide number of cards, you win. A turn 4 Verdant Force can be killed in a trillion ways even before it can attack. Hermit is eaten up ONLY by mass removal effects! What say you to that?

With that said, Verdant Force still comes in 1st with Hermit following in 2nd.

By don on Sunday, November 25, 2001 - 11:59 am:

Maybe Penumbra Wurm is more than a kiddy rare because even Mike Turian ran one copy of it in his 5-0-1 Secret Force deck at Worlds.

I think the Penumbra Wurm is harder to deal with because it survives Perish (otherwise a backbreaking card) and it has trample to roll over Mother of Runes and Spectral Lynx if that's what you want. Sure, Verdant Force has the way better special ability, but Penumbra Wurm is actually a lot harder to kill than Verdant Force and I think that's where it matters.

What do you think?

By DE, Land Destruction a Specialty (De) on Monday, November 26, 2001 - 08:32 am:

And what happened to Force of Nature? If it doesn't trample, its no good. And FoN is one of the biggest tramplers out there.

By goldenj on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:50 pm:

Green fat -- the love of my Magic Life. BTW, it ain't fat if it's Bolt Bait.

2) Ernham Djinn, the man who made Armageddon. Besides he reads the Duelist.
3) Verdant Force. Favorite fatty of the Patron Saint of Green. Singlehandedly beats Sligh. How good is that?
4) Blastoderm, the fungus that made Fervor good.
5) Stampeding Wildebeest. If you haven't played stupid green, you can't understand the fun.

and my number one: Force of Nature, the first, the fattest. Never treacherous or bribed. Not bad to Donate.

HM: Killer Bees, Autumn Willow, Thorn Elemental, Child of Gaea, Lhurgoyf, Weatherseed Treefolk

Obviously this is more sentimental than analytical of current 1.5 or 1.x metagame.

By Sligh Rick on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 07:59 pm:

How about Dirtcrowl worm LOL! hehe Ive actually done miracles with him in a couple of games =)

But For Real Id say my tops are

1. Verdant Force
2. Kavu Titan
3. Deranged hermit

By Chris on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 12:25 am:

since we have gone from straight green fatty to multi-colored green fatty to straight green weenie to not even green fatty, i think i will have to just mention sliver queen :) yes she also makes tokens and they get all kinds of support from others :) target her? nah not with cryst in play

but...straight green has to be verdant force.

By i8piggo on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 01:27 am:

Ancient Silverback never gets no respect. Nice solid, reliable. Emperor Crocodile's pretty cool too. These destiny creatures are all getting neglected. Yavimaya Encantress can be pretty fat in the right deck.
Blastoderm's untargetability makes it incompatible with (IMO) green's best spell: Rancor.

By Taro, Donater of Little White Rabbits (Taro) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 02:07 am:

Morphling is the best green fatty in the game of Magic.

By Wouter on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 04:10 am:

scryb sprites :) behold the air!!

By DE, Land Destruction a Specialty (De) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 10:02 am:

Apart from the mighty FoN:

Anavolver is actually pretty good, used it in block with domain deck.

Stampeeding Wildebeest were very useful. They are still totally playable.

Arctic Wolves were big and cantrip. Nice.

By Scott on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 08:57 am:

You all have missed the only creature that green has that will WIN you the game against Superman (Morphling).
KILLER BEES !!
they rule in elf decks w/ quirion ranger. They allow you to play agaist oath decks without fear. and can be cheaply cast after baiting blue with another spell (this is a WIN unless STP is topdecked)
also good: Saproling burst (most versatile fatty)

By LordLamneth on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 10:19 am:

Yes! Killer Bees rule! Don't forget to combine with Rofellos for insane kill!

LordLamneth
