Beyond Dominia: The Type 1.5/1.X Magic Mill: Beat the Beatdown (with Beatdown) !

By don on Friday, January 11, 2002 - 06:02 pm:

Hello

It's been a while since I posted something on Beyond Dominia. Well, here I am, fresh off another new 1.5 deck idea. I've got a very beatdown-oriented metagame with a harsh time limit here, so you won't come far if your playing Stasis. However, my friend challenged me to come to the next tourney playing mono-blue.

Forbidian and Stasis are out of question, and Fish is outright bad when others are packing burn or are playing Secret Force or WW. I came up with my own design trying to beat the Beatdown. Here it is:

Beat the Beatdown:

Creatures:
4 Tradewind Rider (heart & soul of the deck)
4 Gilded Drake (combine with TR to steal creatures over and over)
4 Man-o-war (good to dictate the tempo, synergy with TR and Gilded Drake)
4 Suq-Ata Firewalker (the best Tim out there)
4 Ophidian (the only way to draw cards)

Spells:
4 Counterspell
4 Force of Will
4 Legacy's Allure (amazing against weenies)
4 Brainstorm

Land:
20 Island
4 Mishras Factory

Of course, this is just a raw version. I'm not completely sure about running Brainstorms and the 4 copies of Gilded Drake (three may be the better number). I'm also thinking about including the following cards:

-Powder Keg
-Impulse (or something to manipulate the library)
-Wash Out
-Amnesia (combo with Wash Out)
-Misdirection

Would be nice to get some feedback!

P.S: Lately, there are quite a few spammers on this mill (look at the posts of the last few weeks), which really decreases the quality of this Mill and drives other players away. Rakso, if you're reading this, please delete that unnessecary stuff from the 1.5/1.X Mill.

I like it. Its cool.
I dont know that much about T1.5 though.
To me it seems like it may be to slow.

By don on Sunday, January 13, 2002 - 11:21 am:

Yeah, so what should I do to make it faster?

I'm in desperate need of comments and critics about this deck. Come on!

By cockz0r on Sunday, January 13, 2002 - 10:04 pm:

shut up, the deck sucks

By Tracer Bullet, the DanDan Man (Tracer) on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 12:45 am:

Well, for one, try finding more acceleration. Mana Drains are completely legal in 1.5, and provide badass speed boosts. In addition, you're lacking anything that really does anything. Firewalkers, Tradewind Riders and Man-O War are ok, not terribly bad, but you're very very vulnerable to a variety of strategies prevelant in 1.5. Suicide-B/Pox/Nether Void will all rip you a new asshole, simply because you don't have enough counters to counter their crucial spells and not enough speed to power through them. In addition, you need to find more permenant board control, as Tradewind isn't enough. Personally, I'd drop the firewalkers for Kegs, Allures for 2 Mana Leak/ 2 Masticore, Brainstorms for Impulses (much much better when you don't have shuffle effects) and 1 ManoWar + 1 Guilded Drake for 2 Counterspells. I'm really worried about your deck being overall weak, it just doesn't have enough umph, but good luck.

By shimrod on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 06:07 pm:

Mana drain and sapphire medallions would really speed you up.

Floodgate is a cute trick if you running medallions. I think the allures are good maindeck. I would cut the tims and go with
four powder keg instead.

Propaganda is also nice in this deck.
It forces swarmers to attack one at a time,
which make tradewind much more effective.

You don't finish quickly enough, so 2 or 3 morphling may be in order. I would cut drakes
down to 2 or three.

I would also fit in 4 wasteland for problem
lands like stronghold (recurring bone shredder/nekrataal/flametongue kavu is death for you).

Tracer, remember, his metagame is full of beatdown! But I agree on most aspects, the current deck would indeed be too slow. Kegs are desperately needed as any untargetable creature would give you troubles!

What is so bad about Fish to beat other aggrodecks? Just play 4 Misdirection and some pitchcounters/Dazes maindeck! With Mis-D you can tap out first few turns. When they try to kill your critters they will fry their own instead!

By don on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 03:33 pm:

Oh ho. There we go.

I agree that the deck is too slow and that I should play Mana Drain, but I haven't got enough bucks to buy 4 copies of Mana Drain (or well, I simply can't find them)...

The Tims are too slow and were replaced by the Powder Kegs since my other creatures are 3cc and more.

The current decklist:

4 Counterspell (or the poor mans Mana Drain)
4 Force of Will
4 Legacys Allure
4 Powder Keg
1 Amnesia (because it's so cool)

4 Tradewind Rider
4 Manowar
3 Gilded Drake
4 Ophidian

20 Island
4 Mishras Factory (so cool, so strong)

As you can see, there is space to fit in 4 more cards. Impulse seems like the logical choice, but looking at my mana-curve, I see that there are quite a lot of spells in the 2cc slot. Suggestions?

Two little things:

-Saphire Medaillon probably isn't that good in this deck because of Powder Keg.

-Please bear in mind that almost all of my opponents play beatdown in some form (usually mono-colored), so it's logical that Nether Void will rip this into pieces. However, I don't play against that :-)

By muscle contractions on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 02:38 am:

the benefits of sapphire medallion might outweigh the slight risk that your powder keg might happen to have two counters on it. speed will always help, and having cheaper spells will always be better, even if just for a short time.

By don on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 03:31 pm:

Hm, but the Medaillon only produces one colorless mana if I play one spell. Its only useful if I cast two or more spells in one turn, which I don't do often with this deck.

Some questions: Would Standstill be good in this deck? Should I maindeck Washout?

By Guapeton on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 06:12 pm:

the medallion REDUCES the cost by 1 colorless mana... it fits very nicely in ur deck.

By Iryoolan on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 - 09:19 pm:

Are you stuck on the tradewind rider/gilded drake thing? Theres always Serendibs, Morphling and Psionic Blasts... last I heard they were not illegal in 1.5.

I saw an agro blue deck on the type 1 mill that uses Rootwater Thieves... it was called Ice Blue but I'm not sure who created it.

Misdirections are VERY strong... also think about Back to Basics since 1.5 almost always means dual lands.

By don on Friday, January 18, 2002 - 06:53 pm:

Yeah, but read Rakso's Bounce primer, where he explains the use of the Medaillon.

Well, Serendibs are friggin good, I have to get my hands on them (but they're hard to get, the Psionics, too). In desperate search of a budget replacement I saw one card from Portal 2 (Portal is allowed at our local tournaments)

Sea Drake
Uncommon
2U
4/3
Flying
When this comes into play, return two lands you control to the owners hand.

Now, what do you think about this sleeper card? Sort of reminds me of a Serendib and a Gush rolled into one card.

By Iryoolan on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 01:54 pm:

The Sea Drake sounds good in general... but one of the main reasons that makes the Serendib so good, besides its casting cost, is that it has a 4 toughness. This allows it to withstand nearly every single bolt type spell. When people start having to use multiple cards to remove a single card you have card advantage.

But since it is legal in your local store it doesn't sound bad for a replacement. You might also think about Rainbow Efreet... its more of a replacement for Morphling but it ranks up there in the top blue creatures list.
