Beyond Dominia: The Type 1.5/1.X Magic Mill: colorless damage for sligh in extended...

hey all, havent been on in ages (all but stopped playing) but decided I might try some small tourneys again with a sligh style deck.

If one doesnt have cursed scrolls (and cant afford them on his starving college student budget) what are some other options? Either artifact creatures, damaging artifacts, either/or. (IE I dont like the fact that a chill or COP can almost instantly shut me down..)

NOTE: the cheaper the better. Broken super rares are right out unless they somehow amazingly cost only a dollar or two a card :)

...
Barbarian ring(?) - 2 damage each.

-Questionable card section-
jinxed idol
keldon necropolis
rath's edge
razor pendulum
rod of ruin
scalding tongs
skull catapult
shivan gorge
telim'tor's darts
misers'/paupers' cage, depending on your metagame

i didn't check if all of those cards are extended legal, though. However, most should not be expensive, since they're very rarely used.

Ghitu Encampment and Barbarian Ring maybe. Plus Chimeric Idol.

Is alliance 1.X legal? If so, why not phyrexian warbeast?

By Tracer Bullet, the DanDan Man (Tracer) on Sunday, February 03, 2002 - 12:42 pm:

The question is, why do you need colorless damage? If it's due to stuff like Story Circle and CoP:Red, then Anarchy or splash green for Tranquil Domain might be a little bit of a better idea. 4 Tiaga plus Land Grant should be all the Green you need, and this will allow you to not only get rid of CoP:Red, but multiple Chills without paying extra.

By greyfell on Sunday, February 03, 2002 - 01:40 pm:

hmmm, anarchy is a thought. I'd rather not splash green, the less things that could go wrong (IE wrong color mana) the better. Besides I dont own a single taiga.

Got a underground sea around here somewhere...

IMHO, a proactive solution is better than a reactive one in an aggro deck. IE, do you prefer beating with a colorless 3/4, or keeping that hull breach in hand?

Thran Lens only costs around $1 on-line.

By BrianB, the Patron of Elves and Silly Combos (Brianb) on Monday, February 04, 2002 - 03:31 pm:

Thran lens stinks. I've seen it tried as an answer to perish, anarchy, COPs, whatever, and it's never very good. Cursed scroll and barbarian ring work great because they are overall good cards that just happen to be colorless. The fact that they can kill priests and finish the opponent off around a COP: red is just gravy. If you want something else, chimeric idol is the next best choice. It's colorless beatdown that isn't around during your opponent's oath phase. After that, maybe Urza's Rage. While it's not exactly colorless, it might as well be if your opponent just stalls the game and doesn't kill you before you get 11 mana. Even without the kicker, it's handy in a lot of situations. All of the above are good maindeck choices. SB Anarchy is a given unless you're willing to concede to white decks. The green splash idea can work in certain metagames, but it has drawbacks, too, like not always getting the green when you need it and making yourself slightly vulnerable to anti-basic land stuff (including your own Price of Progress, of which every sligh deck should run 4, divided as you choose between main and side).

if you want to splash green, land grant would be a good idea

By ikabopo on Tuesday, February 05, 2002 - 11:42 am:

phyrexian war beast is good for the three mana slot...in my sligh deck though, my answers to cop's and warmth and chill were to use red/blue dual lands and throw some mind bends and sleight of mind in the sideboard...winter orb is good for story circle... "attack with everything" "i story circle it all" "winter orb ha ha"
