Usually the cards that are the best in limited are removal, any kind. Wether it be a tapper, Terror-like card, Direct Damage, or Earthquake like effect. Cards that remove a lot of creatures (Earthquake, Thrashing Wumpus, Breath of Darigaaz, etc.) tend to be the best.
Another great thing to take is creatures with great effects. For example, tappers, pumpable creatures (cinder shade, etc.), creatures that deal damage (Kris/Arch Mage, Fireslinger, etc.), or any other great ability.
Finally, cards that don't do any of these, but still bring great effects (Fires of Yavimaya, Armadillo Cloak, Crusade).
You make the call on your style, but I've found that removal and creatures are the main things in limited.

Day 1 of the GP is Sealed Deck, and if you have no byes that means 7-8 rounds of sealed you get to draft, so I would focus my efforts on practicing building sealed decks, comparing cards, and building consistent mana bases.

First picks aren't that essential in drafts, and are easy to pick out. If you see them, great. It is strategy/adaptation to the draft and specifically the picks you make from about 3rd-6th pick that will usually define the quality of your deck. If you can, keep track in your head of the rough amount of each of the following you have (removal, high cost creatures, efficient creatures, game-breakers/tricks).

It is important that you know this because it will help you prioritize picks, especially in the later packs. If most of your creatures are 5-6 cc, then acceleration and/or low cost creatures become much more valuable than they would be first pack. Particularly be careful not to draft too many tricks/breakers.
